techdiver (22), USA Jan 4, 2008 Pours a clear deep amber with a 2 finger head that dissipates slowly.
Sweet malt, oak and hops greet the nose.
Taste echoes the nose with a well balanced complexity that belies the usual overwhelming hops character of this style. Sweetness more predominate than in your usual Double IPA.
Mouthfeel is heavy with little carbonation and has quite a bit of density.
Drinkability is good for a brew of this style, the aging helps tremendously in this respect. Main concern is the high alcohol content.
ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 4, 2008 Pours a thick orange brown syrup color. Head is big and yeasty. Smells of belgian sugar, hops, honey, and maybe some spices. Tastes of belgian sugar and honey. Very sweet almost overly sweet but the oak aging really round out the flavor nicely. Marsiblursi (1631), Göteborg, Sweden Dec 30, 2007 (Bottle thanks Degarth) Pours reddish amber with off white head. The aroma is a nice mix of oak wood, tropical fruits, malt and hops. Butter, light vanilla, passion fruit, mango, pine apples, apples, starfruit, grapefruit, resiny pine, dried herbs, dried apricots, caramel, fudge, almond paste, doughy cookies, hints of figs and strawberry jam are all present. Some alcohol warmth. The flavour is medium to full sweet with a lot of fruit things happening. Buttery oak, caramel and cookie like malt in the background. Light herb and citric bitter. Tiny pepper with a numbing alcohol sting. The mouthfeel is round and sticky. Medium bodied. The aroma is nice and interesting but the flavour is a bit too sweet and one dimensional. Cruzan59 (197), Lititz, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 30, 2007 12oz single from Bayville Package Store, Selbyville, DE...bottle pours clear amber with a minimal white head...smell mixes tangy citrus with sweet subtle malts...flavor is of orange, hops, malt, honey, and red apple as it warms...mild alcohol in the after taste...honestly, I was expecting something different...maybe I had this one too soon after the Midas and D’Extra (wasn’t the same night)...the flavors meshed too close together. bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Dec 25, 2007 Small bottle. Reddish orange color. Grapefruit, red berries, oak and honey in the soft aroma. Sweet raisinny flavor with oak and red berries. Mandarine curacao. Syrupy mouthfeel. Alcohol is incredibly well hidden. Hopbitter oily raisinny aftertaste. Excellent! Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA Dec 24, 2007 Good grief, I enjoyed this beer. Huge Dogfish fan anyway so been trying to grab this out and have a go. Christmas Eve so I did.
Fairly close to the 90 minute on the pour, maybe a little darker.
Smells absolutely wonderful. Hoppy with that underlying woody smell of the oak. I could smell this all day.
One of the best tasting beers I’ve had so far. Prefect blend of hops and bourbon. Wonderful. Wish I had another bottle.
I will be going back to grab another few bottles of this. This stuff is great. Don’t know how many I could drink due to the 10% but I want this around all the time. Loved it. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Dec 23, 2007 Thanks to my BA SS for this! Pours a really hazy shade of amber with extremly thin head and 2 rings of lacing. Hoppy aroma. Flavor was complex, however was really cloying and left a sticky mouth-feel. As this warmed up the sweetness mellowed out a bit. Sweet caramel, toffee, maple syrup, oak, and vanilla round out iipa
like alot of the dfh big offerings this is a little to sweet, however not offensive like the 120 frankenstein (64), Livermore, California, USA Dec 11, 2007 Has a strong aroma of apricots and malt. The color is like that of a brandy. The taste is really amazing, strong apricot and malt, amazingly complex. This is very similar to a dessert wine, neat beer.
