Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

12 oz 2006 bottle with thanks to Thickfreakness! Cap pops off and instantly im knocked back by alcohol and caramel. Pouring into the glass it takes on a very resinous oily character the color of amber. Not much head to speak of, leaving it to sit like apple cider in the glass. First sip is damn near cloying sweetness, with the most notable flavors being caramel, some smoky peat, and some faint piney hops. The sweetness seems to fade a bit with a bigger drink. Alcohol is unquestionably there, but it remains obscured by caramel malts..Thats funny. I just noticed this isnt a barley wine but a DIPA. I wonder what this is like fresh?

Dark amber pour with a moderate off-white head. Some hops, but not huge, malt, a little citrus and smoke aroma. Flavor is very smooth, a little sweet and the hop bite is minimal and late. The alcohol is very well hidden. Very good.

Fort Worth Saucer. Bottle. I can’t make heads or tales of this. Strong banana aromas, crazy taste, thick mouthfeel, a lingering aftertaste that slightly burns.

Clear orange-red pour with a two finger off-white head, good retention and nice lace. Legs visible indicating high ABV. Pungent citrus hop aroma with caramel, toffee and alcohol sweetness, slightly oakey. Smooth sweet flavors, mostly alcohol and caramel, with the hops coming through near the end finishing dry with slight alcohol warmth. Smooth medium body, moderate-low carbonation and moderate alcohol warmth. Above average but unremarkable.

12 oz bottled on 6/19/09. Moderately thick beige head and thin whispy lacing. Honey thick reddish amber body. Smells of floral hops and oak, almost bourbony. Lots of alcohol on the back of the tongue. The blend of fresh and oak aged IPAs hints of a barleywine style. Somehow the thick malty sweetness reigns in the bitterness of the hops a little more than I had hoped.

Was unsure at first at how an IPA would to take to barrel aging. Well, Dogfish Head has pulled it off quite nicely. It seems to be quite a bit less hoppy than the 90 minute. The barrel aging has given this IPA a nice creamy texture as well as vanilla and caramel flavors. The hops and still there and integrate almost flawlessly with the barrel flavors. Yum

I enjoyed this beer on draft at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore. The beer had a dark amber-bronze color with an average sized white head that had great cling and average retention. It had a heavy grain and earthy aroma with some citrus components too and a bit of malt. The taste was very bitter and grainy with some sour yeast flavors too. The beer had a wet body with a dry finish, moderate carbonation, and was filling although light.
