budzo651 (14), USA Jul 24, 2007 A little bitter to the taste. Poured amber colored with a shallow head. very bitter hops. oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Jul 21, 2007 Very cloear copper colour- surprisingly so. Perhaps quite filtered. Not much head to speak of, some minor lacing. Smell- smells quite sugary. Taste- very sweet wtih the woods fairly pronounced. Medium cabonation. Slightly boozy with caramel and doughy malts in forefront. The hops are more herbal and grassy than bitter citrus. It finishes decently though- not too much cloying sweetness on the finish. The vanilla and wood really shows up on the finish too. Hops are kind of an afterthought in this beer. Drinkability is decent- it is a slow sipper. Quite enjoyable, not an every day beverage. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jul 16, 2007 THOUGHTS: Almost more of a barley wine. If it didn’t say double IPA, I never would have guessed it. Mostlry malt sweetness. Not much hops. It’s also a little like Raison D’Etre. Another extreem masterpiece from Dogfish head. The only thing missing is some hop flavoring. But I guess all the hops that were in here are there to just keep the beer from being sickeningly sweet. The alcohol is very present in the aroma , but not as much in the flavor. Also a ton a brown sugar flavor. I gave it a couple bonus points overall because it’s just awesome.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium orange with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished but left good lacing. The aroma was heaby caramel malt and light citrus hops (grapefruit and orange) along with raisin, honey , brown sugar, alcohol, a little bourbon, and light banana and cask wood. The initial flavor was heavily sweet, lightly acidic and sour, while the finish was heavy to harsh sweetness, moderate acidity, lightly bitter and sour with an average duration. The body was medium to full and syrupy with soft carbonation and a moderate alcoholic finish. Crit (2399), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jul 14, 2007 Sparkling amber, lasting beige head. Sweet alcoholic nose. Whatever hops there are are overpowered by the syrupy sweet molasses and harsh alcohol heat. Certainly not an IPA, but a barleywine, and a poor one at that.
A very poor effort from a great brewery
This crap actually gave me a massive case of heartburn jakentbc (15), New York, USA Jul 12, 2007 a clear dark amber beer with little to no head. malty sweetness in the nose with a slight hop kick. sweet taste with hints of wood and a hot alcohol finish. bager (2121), Copenhagen N, Denmark Jul 12, 2007 Bottled. Semi clear and golden in colour with a medium sized tan head. Malty with notes of smoke, spice, fruit, wood, hops, pines and a slight citric hint. BREWMUSKCLES (1062), New Jersey, USA Jul 11, 2007 sweet malty aroma hits the nose as this brew boils and rolls into its head. the malty sweetness is nearly overpowering but never seems to annoy (aaahhh this must mean vanilla) . this beer at one time had the unwelcomed taste of straw. now it has been morphed into a similar taste that complements the downplaying bitter tastes of the hops... which are there! there is a quality alcohol presence that cannot be ignored. i believe that many of us have thought out the possibilities of a beer like this being created specifically to educate all alcohol efficianados that beer is the king and has been for thousands of years... congratulations dog fish you have created a work that cannot be surpassed!! understand i rate this not as a perfect ipa (that might be questioned even by myself) but in general as a perfect creation in brewing. i can tell you that the finish on this brew is as good as cognac, brandy and port finishes costing hundreds of dollars a botlle. thenick (742), North Bellmore, New York, USA Jul 7, 2007 Pours a nice clear copper with an off-white head. The aroma is very sweet and dominated by malt, sugar, with a hint of that oak "snap" that you get in an oak-aged ale. The sweetness hits your tongue immediately upon tasting, but this beer is not yet finished; it is quite complex. You get a slight alcoholic aftertaste mixed with some hops and darker, more woody flavors. This is definitely an IPA even though the oak adds a whole new level to it.
