bethmatt0421 (317), Covington, Kentucky, USA May 18, 2007 Aroma is wood, vanilla, a suttle citrus. Flavor is smack ya’ in the face sweetness at the front but fades quickly to a vanilla-like hoppiness. Finish is alcoholic, and heavy on the mouth. I just think everything that could be good about this beer is drowned in that sweetness. Overall..so-so. jsquire (2086), St. Marys, Ohio, USA May 18, 2007 Deep golden color out of the 12 oz bottle with a respectable fluffy beige head. Sweet nose of white sugar, pinapple juice and the threat of lots of hops. The initial taste is also "sweet." Caramel, white sugar and some belgian candi sugar all combine to make this one sweet beer. Under all the sugar is a lot of orange zest, pinapple juice and almost smokey honey stickiness. White grapes, vanilla, some oak and pine resin, but all of it is under that undeniable sweetness. Interesting beer. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA May 16, 2007 I feel I should review another beer with my pal Ando or something. Let’s do it!
Appearance: Pours a clear, copper body with a frothy, though quickly diminishing head. Ando, looking troubled, says it reminds him of "scary candy." Oh, how right he’ll be!
Smell: Beyond a touch of wood shavings and an indistinct orange citrus note, its sweet-smelling candy sugar through and through. Ando concludes Burton Baton has been conceived and made in the same vein as Avery’s "Mephistopheles and Other Demons" line (i.e., jacked up sugar and alcohol content). I’m inclined to agree with him.
Taste: Terribly sugary, with a glaring sweetness that impairs the overall taste by laying waste to the other flavors of honey, apples, and pears. Even the bitterness is cowed by the sugar. Ando’s vote goes to "Watered down Toffee Brandy blended with a lil’ bit of bad news." Right on, Ando.
Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied, but altogether cloying with a searing alcoholic warmth to it. Ando says his mouth feels dried out and sugar-encrusted, "like a "problem."
Drinkability: Essentially, I found this to be a flimsy IPA drenched in way too much sugar and alcohol. I feel fortunate to have survived this sugar-esque running of the bulls!
I wonder what beer Ando and I will try next! JK (2945), Richfield, Minnesota, USA May 16, 2007 A solid beer but I don’t understand the ipa classification. This is clearly a barleywine. Light hops in the aroma, but also wine an grapes. The beer is orange and lightly carbonated, and surprisingly thick and sweet. Lots of fruit in the flavor and more red wine. JFURYCAT (782), East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA May 15, 2007 Before reading the description, the 90 Minute IPA qualities were obvious-it has the whiskey-like burn with some minute oak qualities but the malts still rule the roost. I expected a lot more hops and woodiness from the label but instead got a rather elegant blend where the hoppiness seems to have an acidity that bounces off my tongue and the maltiness and cherry wood qualities seem more detectable in the finish. There is also a French Vanilla and grape-like feel to this ale. I prefer the 90 minute alone but this is pretty tasty nonetheless. 2005 vintage bottle from Oak Tree Buy Rite, NJ. (12 oz). I would love to try this without the 90 minute blended in as well. This got a tad bit syrupy as it warmed up and the aroma was better when cold. Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 12, 2007 Pours a dark reddish-copper color with offwhite semi-bubbly head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, light floral hops, a tinge of wood. Taste is sweet caramel malt, moderate citrus hop profile, sugar and slight notes of oak. This is beer is somewhat cloying and slightly syrupy. Meh. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA May 11, 2007 12oz bottled 01/08/07. Pours a dark clean amber with a decent sized white head and moderate carbonation. Also some nice sticky lacing. Big boozy hop in the initial aroma. Pineapple and rich malts are also present. Flavor is very sweet. Sugary malts, pine and hops along with a nice boozy punch. Has a dryish bitter finish. A belly warmer. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA May 11, 2007 12oz. bottle. Floral aroma on the nose at first. Near the middle a caramel aroma and on the finish some alochol and good wooden cask aroma. Amber red body with a yellow/off white head, mild lacing. Dry and juciy cherry flavors with a syrupy texure are very good. Get a wood and caramel flavor on the finish. Dry, wood, tobacco aftertaste on palate
