SJP (483), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 25, 2007 Nice cloudy, deep amber color with a thin off-white head. Smells earthy with hints of citrusy hops and fruit. Nice and sweet, almost like a Belgian ale with notes of cloves and orangy citrus. A little syrupy with a nice hops wallop in the finish. I could barely taste the alcohol, but it gave me that good warming feeling in the stomach. An exceptional beer. IanWalker (6), Lansing, Michigan, USA does not count Apr 23, 2007 First thing I noticed pouring it was how carbonated it is. Not too much head, but a lot of bubbling.
Oak-aging IPAs can, in my experience, be dangerous. But this one turned out well. I found it in 12oz bottles.
It has a nice hop aroma, and not too much bitterness. The oak fits nice with the slight carmel of the malt.
Good clarity and color. I will buy this again. CigarsLoveBeer (153), Illinois, USA Apr 23, 2007 Bottle: Bright red body, with a thin head that retains itself quite well. Aroma screams of citrus hops, sugar cane, apple, and alcohol. For as interesting of an idea as this seemed, it ended up tasting rather cloying. Sweet, hoppy, syrupy, lightly spicy, There’s just a little too much going on here for my tastes... mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Apr 21, 2007 Pours a crystal clear copper-orange color. Produces a thin white head which reduces to a swirly, paisley pattern of foam. Some dispersed streaky lacing along the sides of the snifter. Rich, sweet aromas of caramel and butterscotch candies along with honey and maple syrup come immediately to the forefront. More sudued notes of citrus/pine hop resin, vanilla, raisin, flowers, alcohol and freshly cut wood float in the background. Palate was fairly slick and sticky, but perhaps just slightly on the thin side for such a huge brew. The flavor department delivers quite a pancreas stimulating sweet malt-monster here with notes of candy sugar, orange blossom honey, butterscotch, caramel and rum cake. Subtle flavors of citrusy hop flowers, spices, vanilla bean and toasted oak come to the rescue to tame the insulin-soaked sweetness of this malty ale. Finishes sweet and very warm; reminiscent of rum soaked fruitcake. Overall not what one would consider a well balanced DIPA, but still a solid and unique beer well worth exploring. BleacherBum (176), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA Apr 21, 2007 Aroma hits with grapefruit, hops and apricot. Can taste the oak immediately on the first sip. Love that this is a blend of oaked beer and 90 minute. Nice balance. Sweet and hoppy, with those citrus flavors shining through and a bready/malty finish. Also a bit of warming alcohol in there, but still very smooth for the ABV. A wonderful experience. sirpsycho (342), Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 21, 2007 Bottle. Pours a dark amber. Aroma is sweet, slight citrus, taste is sweet and sticky, overall, a little too sweet for me. Complex, but the sweetness is overwelming. graham515 (420), Houston, Texas, USA Apr 17, 2007 Updated: Mar 14, 2008Pours a nice ruby color with a small white head. The aroma is overwhelmingly amazing! It’s got some real sweet smells with a nice zest to it. There’s a nice malty sweetness with some residual sugar taste. Very sweet with a quick snap. The mouth feel is really nice, its medium bodied in your mouth but feels like it almost expands. An amazing beer that is great for sipping. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Apr 16, 2007 I am not really sure about this beer. I think it is too sweet for my palate, but it IS very complex. There is an sticky sweet aroma of dark amber malt and citrus with a slight oakiness in the taste to match the sickly sweet malt and moderate hop bitterness (which is off set by the body).
