Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Really fresh caramel nose, light amber color, rocky head. Creamy toasted malt body with caramel and vanilla notes. Spicy peppery end turning to more cinnamon. Heavy body - chewy! Alcohol not at all dominating.

12 oz bottle, via cewldre. Pours a clear copper body under a small fizzy off-white head that faded to a partial covering. The nose is big resinous hops over a very sturdy toffee and caramel malt base. Very light but noticable oakiness. Quite unique among IIPAs, the sweet caramel and toffee malt are in the forefront with only moderate bitterness. A little vanilla, oak, and hot alcohol. A slight huskiness emerges late with lots of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is full bodied, just shy of syrupy with lots of sticky risidual sugars. Moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, I’d call this interesting, but not especially great.

Crystal clear amber coloured body with an orange tint, and having a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of fresh hops with vanilla, oak, malt, curacao and alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet malt, curacao, alcohol and a bit of hops noticeable in the taste...more bland than I expected. Aftertaste subtle, but still showing the alcohol and spicey characteristics. Overall, a good beer-thanks VERY much to Phil (Haddon90) for picking me up this twelve ounce bottle from the Brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle on 06-February-2005, Super Bowl Sunday.

12oz bottle, bottled on 01/08/07. Pours a clear, brilliant, reddish-orange color; textured off-white head with great retention and lacing. Chewy, citrus and mineral aroma. Overly sweet mouthfeel: plenty of oranges and grapefruit hops; loads of maple syrup and sticky candy sugar; light, oaky vanilla toastiness adding in another layer. But it’s just too damn sweet. Lengthy, citrus and sticky-sweet finish.

12 oz bottle - Thanks Jonathan3584! Pours amber with decent head and quite a bit of lacing. Aroma is honey, caramel malts, and citrus hops. Flavor is complex a good amout of sweetness, caramel, honey, and some oak flavors come through. You can also taste the citrus hops that I recognized from the 90 minute IPA right away. The oak aging seems to mellow down those hops though because this is much more smooth and lacks the bitter smack of the hops that the 90 minute has. Very smooth on the palate this is definitely a sipper and is full bodied yet very balanced. I was impressed with this one and with each brew I try I get more impressed with DFH. Great job!

Bottle: Hazy orange with a thin white head, woody, light fruits aroma, with a citrus touch, starts and ends bitter, interesting, but I would rather try this before it was blended.

Pours with a frothy, tan colored head that is a mix between largish bubbles and creamy froth. The beer is a brilliantly clear, reddish copper color. As I work my way through my glass of this beer it leaves a nice layered Belgian lace pattern. The aroma is sticky sweet with redolent hop notes like grapefruit, pine, and some sharp spicy notes. There is a bit of hot alcohol which adds to the spicy aromatics, plus a light caramel character is here as well. As the beer warms up a spicy oak note begins to be noticeable and it is joined by a woody aromatic note too.

There is a nice creamy thick mouthfeel in this beer. It is sweet up front with an intense fruity character that is a mix of citrus and berries. The oak character is nicely in balance with the huge hop character; which is to say that the oak is quite subtle and is most noticeable in the finish as a soft, woody, slightly tannic note that is also astringent in a spicy oak kind of way. This beer is really quite smooth and drinkable.

The hop character is probably a bit muted when compared to a fresh sample, but it is still quite evident and really strikes a nice balance with the oak and malt right at this moment in time. The malt has notes of raisins, currants and a bit of caramel. I really like how the spicy oak notes, along with the hint of woody astringency, combine with the spicy and herbal hop notes. The two accentuate each other and form a melodic whole. There are some really nice fruity notes here as well; it is a nice mix of grapefruit, raisins, currants, and even some general berry-type notes thrown into the mix. Quite an enjoyable beer, and I hope to sample this one again.

Bottle at Flying Saucer, Houston with Brett Weir, BillBrasky, and my fiancee. Pours like a top-shelf cognac/whiskey with an intense aroma of white grape, riasin, and peach. A rush of bourbon barrel-raised hops immediately innundates the tongue, only to be quelched by a soft, thick river of sugar candy. Full and thick on the palate. Geez, another fine beer- from Dogfish Head. Can someone please check the temperature in Hell???
