Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Pours a crystal clear garnet into a snifter. Fluffy conglomerate off-white head with excellent retention leaves no lacing. Pine and resin aromas. Thin, sweet caramel and oak. Lasting slightly bitter finish. Sweeter than expected. Tried fresh and aged to same effect.

Slight woodiness keeps this from rolling over to too-sweet territory. Has a richness that many other IIPAs don’t have. Metalllic at times, and leafy. Good.

12oz bottle. Pours clear amber with good white head minimal lacing. Interesting boozy aroma along with some fruity, toffee, toast, and pilsner notes. I definitely pick up the 90 min IPA flavors, but they are in the background. The floral flavors of the glacier hops and the oak aging mix well. Once you combine all of that, it makes for an interesting flavor combination. Like marrying top shelf bourbon and water withDFH 90 minute. Warm, peppery, and bitter finish that gives you a flash of sweet maple before it goes down the throat. This one is hard to classify. But if I had my choice, I would put it in the american strong ale category, not IIPA. Excellent

Draft. Dark brown almost iced tea body with a half inch dense foamy very lasting head. Very, very pretty. Nose-very light wood, light cherry cough syrup, grassy hops. Taste-medium sweetness and biter, rich berries, meaty, salty on the back end, maple syrup (comes out even more as it warms), light aw dust (the oak, perhaps?), a little boozy, medium alcohol, pecan shells, cherry, white grapes, molasses/brown sugar, perfect amount of hops all the way through from beginning to end. I don’t get a lot of the vinous/wood flavors, but they do play very lightly in the background. As it warms I get a kind of drying red wine kind of quality, but not really (!!!). This is one of the best beers I have had in a long time-enough is going on in the brewing process that you would think that this beer would be a train wreck, but it is in fact it is quite well done and exceeds my most greatest hopes. A great beer all the way around. A sweet La Folie maybe? Gets sticky and sweet as it warms, so I dropped the overall form 18 to 17.

Amber body with some cloudiness. White frothy head. Aroma is hoppy with citrus, apricot, oak, caramel, vanilla. Medium bodied with a smooth texture, good carbonation. Semi-sweet flavor. Fruity. Very pleasant and refreshing drink. Thanks, Drew, for putting one aside for me.

12oz bottle from January 2007. Screw the label. I’m not invested in whether this is or is not a DIPA - sure, there are evident hops in the nose and the taste even after a year. But this is basically a quirky, flavorful American strong ale. Massive amounts of oak in there, and strong malts for a pungent nose and hefty body. But there’s a sweetness there too, that’s midway between bubble gum and maple syrup. I dig it fresh, I dig it aged.

Thanks to Sammy. Oakey, kind of belgian fruity, spicy. Flavor is fruity with a bit of barleywine going on. Tingly hop finish. Sweet sticky malt. Not a DIPA but nice!

Pours a orange amber color with a white head. Aroma is of rich malts with bitter hops. Flavor is woody malts with bitter hops. Kind of a mellow IIPA but very good.
