COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

12oz bottle. Pours clear amber with good white head minimal lacing. Interesting boozy aroma along with some fruity, toffee, toast, and pilsner notes. I definitely pick up the 90 min IPA flavors, but they are in the background. The floral flavors of the glacier hops and the oak aging mix well. Once you combine all of that, it makes for an interesting flavor combination. Like marrying top shelf bourbon and water withDFH 90 minute. Warm, peppery, and bitter finish that gives you a flash of sweet maple before it goes down the throat. This one is hard to classify. But if I had my choice, I would put it in the american strong ale category, not IIPA. Excellent

Did not realize how uncommon this way in San Antonio, TX. On tap at Tap Exchange. First taste was not what i was expecting. Veryyy smooth and very flavorful. Wonderful smell of hops. Appearance was light brown to yellow with a white head that lasted its life. Smooth but easy to taste the high ABV and boldness. Easy on the mouth but very flavorful.

Pours a clear orange with a two-fingered off-white head. Smells of tangerine, flowers, hint of spruce. Taste is moderately sweet and bitter, a quick bit of maltiness before the hops take over. Rich and flavorful.

Tap. Pours clear amber with average, creamy white head; short retention and some lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, floral hops, citrus fruit, and light pine. Flavor is sweet malt forward with and supporting hops and fruit esters; dry finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

Reminds me a lot about Laguitas Maximus. Hop, malt interplay. Very tasty and well-crafted. It is priced a bit high ($4 a bottle), so that might be the reason why I wouldn’t get it again.

pours dark red amber color, with a small fluffy head. the aroma is strong right from the bottle and even greater in the glass. The aroma is strong in oak, citrus, grapefruit and raisins. The flavor is very complex, sweet through out. Upfront is caramel, and some vanilla/oak. followed by citrus grapefruit and raisins. This is really good, i wish i had more of this. The palate is a light to medium body, with an alcohol finish but is very smooth. I would recommend this to any Ipa/IIPA lover and hops.... Well done.

Very hoppy with a tiny bit of malt with a smooth flavor and a tart piney after bite. Not something I’d buy over and over again but still a decent oaky, smooth beer.

Poured a hazy caramel, with a frothy off-white head. Smell is very complex with hints of raisins, caramel, brown sugar, orange, pine, and citrus. Taste is plums, caramel, raisins, pine, and citrus. Really started out sweet upfront, creamy and smooth through the middle and had a bitter/alcoholic burn on the finish. The alcohol is starting to show up much more as it warms and bringing out some honey. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with high carbonation. I definitely would not call this a DIPA, and if it is, it would be on the English spectrum. Ironically, if this were a barley wine (which I believe it is), I would categorize it as an American barley wine, because of the pronounced hoppiness. All in all, very complex and damn tasty.

I absolutely love this beer. When I was a kid, centuries ago, I always tried to imagine what kind of beer the dwarves of Middle Earth were drinking. They were drinking Burton Baton. Every bottle is a trip back through time to Lonely Mountain, Moria, and twenty sided die. In 2011, Dogfish Head committed to brewing this beer year round. I, therefore, have committed to drinking it year round.

A - Pours a cloudy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lace. S - Aroma is a mix of citrus and tropical hops with lots of orange, grapefruit, and pineapple, a touch of pine, some oak and vanilla, some rich caramel malt, a touch of brown sugar, and a hint of booze. T - Starts off with some strong citrus and tropical hops with grapefruit, pineapple, and orange flavors, some bitterness, rich caramelized malts, and a bit of brown sugar. Through the middle, some light pine hops come through with some more bitterness, oak and vanilla, and a bit of bready malt. The finish is a mix of tropical hops, bitterness, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, and a touch of booze. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, bitter, and lightly warming finish. D - Very drinkable. I really like the strong hop profile and rich sweet malts, and they balance each other nicely. The oak flavor also adds a nice layer of complexity.
