Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Copper colored beneath a thick and dense white head. Aroma of citrus, some tropical fruits and wood. Pleasant bitterness balanced by some lightly toasty malts. Piney hops, melon and a dry oak filled finish. One of the better Dogfish Head beers I have had in along time.

Bottle. A hazy orange beer with a dense orange head. The aroma is sweet fruity on an alcoholic backdrop. The flavor is fruity with mango and passion fruit being most dominant, leading to an end, that mixes in some wood notes.

Bottle: Poured a reddish-tan with a finger tall head. Sweet smells of caramel and oak dominate the nose. If they ever make "man candles" I want mine to smell like this. First taste has a strong presence of alcohol with some of the caramel malt showing through. Oak is very present in the finish. This is a good beer but I agree with some of the others that this is more like a barley wine than an IPA as it doesn’t have that distinctive IPA hoppiness to it. Anyway - good beer. Gets a little hard to finish, but I’d get it again..

12 oz bottle. I tried this on a couple of occasions and this has been the most disappointing of all Dogfish Head beers. Pours an amber color with a thin head. In both cases, the beer seemed to go flat before I was finished drinking. For the taste, I think the oak, alcohol and malt flavor overwhelmed all others. I would call this a strong ale more than an IPA because it didn’t have much hop flavor, aroma, or bitterness. I’ll take the 60/90/120 min IPA’s any day over this one.

12oz bottle. Pours hazy dark copper with thick off-white head. Aroma is floral hops, citrus, oak and caramel. Flavor is hops, citrus, oak, pine, vanilla and caramel malt. Oak really brings out the alcohol which gives this brew some barley wine characteristics. Nice brew from a brewery that likes to take risks.

From bottle. Pour = hazy amber with small head. Taste = vanilla, caramel and hops. Slight taste of alcohol. Finish = long and spicy....
