To be honest this was a stretch beer for me. Not a style I typically enjoy but the wine/grape notes made this so cloyingly sweet I couldn’t drink it. Not my favorite. No offense to Dogfish, much respect but this was a miss for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a clear golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma is grapes, sweet fruits, yeast, honey. Flavor is very sweet, boozy, honey and has some light vineous characters in it. Some complexity gong on, but also some bland alcoholic sweetness going on. Oily mouthfeel, soft carbo. Long, cloying sweet aftertaste. Decent beer, but I’ve had way better from them.

Appearance of honey, smells winey/grapey. Tastes sweet, simple sugary but balanced with hops and fruit. Good.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted from bottle. Pours a clear gold with minimal white head that fades quickly. Prominent wine aroma and grapes with some honey and floral notes. Taste is very sweet and wine like with essentially no bitterness. Floral, honey and grape tastes. Basically a cross between an ale and wine. Taste is good but because of the sweetness I wouldn't want to drink more than tulip glass. Light to medium bodied with a sweet and effervescent mouthfeel. I really love the concept of ancient ales and dogfish does an outstanding job. All very interesting to taste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a lot of suspended sediment with a white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of honey, sour fruit and Hawthorne? fruit-maybe that’s the smell I can’t quite name. Taste is heavy sweet honey, very lightly bitter and light sourness. Medium body, with a flavor that’s reminiscent of Riesling and mead, average to soft carbonation, oily to thick texture and a brief sweet finish. Very interesting and difficult to rate because it varies so far from what I usually think of as beer.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A: beautiful clear, golden honey color, moderate head
S: I smell grapes, spices, light bready/malty scents, sweet and lightly floral
T: a strong initial sweetness, grapes and grain come through nicely, light and dances on the palate. Pears, grape and fruit are very prominent, slightly malty too which makes for a very nice overall blend and balance of flavors
O: I really like ALL of Dogfish’s ancient ale beers and this one is no different. It is properly balanced, has a muscular alcohol content that isn’t over aggressive, but rather blends in nice. That being said, I won’t run out as fast as possible to go get more but I DO look forward to picking this up again. A wonderful beer that should at least be tried once.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Whole Foods Chandler. Very sweet aroma of apple juice, pears, and a touch of Belgian yeast esters. Clear, medium golden in appearance with a thin white head that quickly dissipates. Almost sickening sweet at the first sip, with apple, a ton of honey, some pineapple, and light cereal. Any spice notes were hardly detectable, which was a distinct change from the last time I drank the beer two years ago.

750 mL bottle with some age on it. Pours a hazy orange color with a thin fizzy white head. Aroma of honey, dark fruits, grapes, mild earthy and floral notes. The taste is grape, honey, candied citrus, rice, caramel, lingering tartness. Medium bodied, low carbonation, no heat. Decent.

Served in a 4oz taster at Churchkey in Washington DC. One of the better of Dogfish Head’s ancient ales.
