Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

I really enjoyed this beer. It pours a hazy amber with a quickly fleeting head. There’s a really interesting fruitiness (I’m going to assume it’s the hawthorn). A bit of honey on the nose. Fairly mellow, but still flavorful. Really tasty.

Bottle. Pours a golden body with a white body. Well they said it all rice, honey, grapes some orange. Some hoppy floral character. I kept thinking at least its 9%.

Bottle sample at DFH/beerbistro dinner. Deep golden with a thin white head. Aroma is interesting - earthy and spicy with a strong floral honey character - really nice! Body is soft. Flavour is wonderfully sweet and complex - honey, grapes, apple and spice - with a quick, warm finish. Always great to see experiments like this work out so well.

Bottle; courtesy of kleyland, with a little bit of age on it. Pours a dirty oarange color with a thin and very short lasting head. Weird pour. Aroma of honey, apples, grape; a touch medicinal, but no to offputting. Flavor of honey and grapes mostly; only a touch sweet, not overly. Medicinal with a touch of spice. Can see how this would be hit or miss for some. To me it wasn’t a complete miss, but nothing very exciting. Interesting concept though.

75cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a golden color with a thin white-tan head that dissipates quickly. Seems very carbonated. Aroma is grape, spice and flowers. Flavor is fresh fruit, grapes and spices with a quick finish. Well-balanced ale that is very interesting.
