COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

On tap at the gaithersburg brewpub. Very interesting flavors--lots of spices, fruit and coriander. I found it overpoweringly sweet, though. An unbalanced body that I only wanted a bit of.

On tap @ Stogies N Hops. Pours bright golden copper with thin lacy white head. Aroma is sweet sugary malt with slightly dry earthy musty notes. Taste is hugely sweet pale malt, so sharply sweet it’s not even syrupy. Sorta vinous, quite dry on the back, and the super sweet malt finishes clean. The rice likely contributes to the thin light malt; and the honey and fruit load sugar in. Not one of their best, but always interesting with Dogfish.

tastes like beer and grape juice mixed together....I love how they came up with their recipe(s)...I can’t speak enough about how great that is... however, that doesn’t mean it will actually taste very good and this one is a bit off the mark for me....quite sweet...malty...slightly better as you sip....but too sweet for me...the palate is where it loses most....sweet then slight sour beer...poor combo

A light sweetness in the aroma but the sweet juicyness is prevalent in the taste. A bit of wine notes in the finish, and although it feels like it was blended with juice, it?s fun to taste.

Honey raisin aroma. Hazy golden color with a good head. Wow, sweet! Honey taste right off the bat, malt and grapes. OK, not my style.

2011 vintage 750ml bottle poured into my Dogfish Head Snifter. Pours a clear orange color with a medium off white head that leaves decent lacing. Smells of honey, caramel, fruit, and a wine like vine like quality. Tastes of the same things. Mouthfeel is slick and thin with light lacing and a semi dry finish. Unique but sort of weird. The ingredients don’t work that great together. One of my least favorite Dogfish Head beers.

Bright orange pour from draft at Eataly. Massive flavor. Honey and Carmel. Fruits earth and grass. A big beer and enjoyed mostly

Unique but not enough to save it. Mild honey and malt aroma. The color was also golden honey with a fizzy white head. There was a lot of sediment with this beer. Thick but not overly weighty palate. Carbonation was average. There are really no style characteristics to compare this to so I don’t know if they got it right or not. The flavor took some getting used to and I don’t think I ever acclimated. Strong honey sweetness hits you up front and lingers. Some grassy malts and citrus follow with some spice. One try is enough.

2010 vintage, 750 ml bottle into a tulip. Pours a hazy amber with a finger of soapy white foam. Nose is white grape, oxidation, spices, and some citrus rind. Taste is the same. Sweet honey soaked grapes with spice and light but pleasant oxidation. Medium bodied and kind of syrupy. Overall it’s probably a bit past it’s prime but it’s still decent enough.

Catching up on some old ratings from Untappd -- First rated on 20 Sep 2011. Honey very evident.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma is grapes, sweet fruits, yeast, honey. Flavor is very sweet, boozy, honey and has some light vineous characters in it. Some complexity gong on, but also some bland alcoholic sweetness going on. Oily mouthfeel, soft carbo. Long, cloying sweet aftertaste. Decent beer, but I’ve had way better from them.
