COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

Pours opaque dark brown with off-white head with large bubbles. Aroma of coffee, chicory, licorice. Taste is a bit sour, which seems unusual for a stout. Not really sweet at all. Mild finish. Mouthfeel is medium. Overall good. Not as heavy as a lot of stouts, lower ABV (5.6%). This would be a good summertime stout.

Amazing rush of flavor with a slight bite. There’s a lot going on in this beer, but all of it comes together for an amazing experience.

Pours dark dark brown and almost completely opaque. Head is about a half inch thick, and has a lot of structure to it. Aroma hints at malt, smoke, some wood and coffee, and some chocolate-covered strawberries. Tastes a bit sour at the start and stays slightly sour through the middle. The woody taste also features prominently. On the palate, it feels pretty thin. Overall, pretty good.

Pours a solid dark brown that lets a smidgen of light through with a creamy off white head that persists admirably. Smells of roast chocolate and caramel mostly. Slight earthy spicy edge is light but there. The taste leans a bit more to that spicy earthy edge than the aroma did. There’s definitely a roasty, coffee, caramel malt flavor here but its countered by some flavors that I’m having trouble describing. Herbal earthy almost minty flavors that no doubt come from the cornucopia of odd ingredients in the brew. Medium body and level of carbonation with a full creamy smooth mouthfeel. I kind of enjoyed this, but its not something I think I would drink very often, I find it a little weird tasting.

In years past, I have been a fan of Dogfish Head’s beers. And...I love these type coffee/chocholate/flavored stout beers but this one is quite a disappointment. It tastes like a basic Guinness mixed with a day-old cup of Folgers! No richness, no complexity, no palate magic, pop or interest of any sort. If you like the flavored stouts, try another one. I will also say, I’m not sure whats happened to Dogfish, but their beers are suffering this year. Last year, I loved the "Punk", but this season’s was no where near as good. 90 IPA seems intact... Sorry Dogfish!

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2012 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells like roasted malts, coffee and a veggie garden. Chicory is quite present. Taste like dark coffee with half a sugar and herbs. Very smooth and and rich, and enjoyable to drink. Great stout with a chicory twist.

"Had this on tap at the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Fairfax VA. It was in a sampler glass. A - Three finger head, very dark but still pretty easy to see through. S - Wood, fig, maltiness and toffee T - Coffee, wood, earthiness. I can’t really pinpoint it but I’m guessing the Chicory wood is causing all of this deep, dark flavor to come through. M - Foarmy, light and very filling. O - This was a solid beer. It’s expensive for a 4-pack but I bought one to take home with me. I’d have it again but it’s not in my top 50 which is a shame. Have this beer with some rich cheese and something fried."

12 oz. bottle from an English pint. Pours a dark brown/black color with a small, light tan head. Aroma has a lot of nondistinct roasty malts. Taste has a decently large roasty character up front followed by a light, roasty coffee aroma. FInish actually has a decent hop bitterness. Overall, it seems to be a very generic stout.
