3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
This tastes like chocalate, licorice, and coffee all rolled into one. With a hint of vanilla this would be a great beer. Disappointed in the low alochol content for such a flavorful beer. As always, more head would be nice. Almost tastes like kvas.

Not really my favorite offering from dogfish. Has a weird stale sort of flavor that I think is actually the chicory. Otherwise roasty and fairly dry.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Its body has a very dark, nearly opaque deep brown color with a dark tan head on top. The pour gave me a tall head with great retention. It is also good at making lots of slippery lacing on the glass. The aroma is full of deep roasted malty goodness with light notes of wood and smoke. A very slight earthy hop presence is also noted. Its medium to full body has lots of malt depth and complexity. The base has deep roasted maltiness with a slightly smoky/woody coffee like character. As it warms on the tongue the middle brings out sweeter notes of brown sugar, caramel and molasses in the malt. Underneath all this is a light herbal/dried leafy hop presence that adds a hint of bitterness and touch of dryness to the finish. The finish is still leaning more on the sweeter roasted malty side however.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
pours thick and very dark with a nice tan head. Fades to a small dense churning at center. Although dark to the eyes I believe there is enough eviendence to suggest a rather robust attenuation.
When I smell this beer with my nose I can sense rich malt aromas, Roasted malts and coffee too.
Upon drinking this beer I taste a rich roasted maltiness with hints of chocolate and coffee.
Hints of bitter earthiness too, at finish.
A medium to thick mouthfeel with a dry finish. The aftertaste has a bitterness to it that lingers.
A nice well rounded brew in my opinion, worthy of many more.

3.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours black coffee dark with a thin cream head and almost no lacing. Smells of coffee, chicory, dark roast malts, and dark fruit. Taste is of coffee and bitter with a hint of sweet fruit at the end. Finish is mostly clean, slightly sticky. Pretty unimpressive compared to the Elysian coffee milk stout I had most recently.

This is truly a great stout. Really complex, well balanced. Great smoky /coffee/ and light licorice notes. This beer has a full rich body, packs a lot of flavor, and worth every penny. As usual Dogfish does a great job, and hit this one out of the park

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2014 Pours black with a few fingers thick brown head from bottle. Clear taste of chicory and flavorful spices. A bit of bite for a stout which is a nice change of pace. Light mouth feel

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Continuing on my reviews of DFH, Iíve found myself at one of my all-time favorite beers.
From pint glasses to snifters to even chalices, Iím trying to think what glassware I havenít had this in.
The appearance was always a ruddy orange to brown color with a decent one finger white foamy head that dies within about a minute and left some nice foamy sticky lacing. The way it clings and how it seemed like an eternity before it actually started to even want to start to slide was beyond me - if anything I love the stubbornness of the lacing to stay where it is.
The aroma - wow what didnít thing have in it. There was a nice okay licorice showcasing a nice roasty coffee - like smell that seemed to be increasing in strength as it warms.
The taste took all that I previously mentioned and smoothed things out eloquently with a nice touch of vanilla.
On the palate, this one sits about a medium to heavy on the body when itís fresh. Iíve noticed with some age with this, it does end up thinning out a bit.
Overall, what an absolutely awesome American Stout, wish I could get this every Autumn itís released.
