From the bottle, pours a dark, almost black with a thin but resiliant light tan head. Aromas of smooth, dark coffee beans, dark roasted malts, and some light fruit, maybe plum? Tastes very smooth and full of flavor. Definitely coffee, some milk chocolate. Very lightly bitter at the finish. This is an excellent beer.

Aug 21, 2008 12 oz bottle from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Poured a thick, hardy black body with a thin soft tan head. Roasted coffee, toffee, chicory, nutty deep nose. Prickly dry, clean, dry full-bodied finish. Very enjoyable.

Aug 20, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours black or dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma strong dark and milk chocolates, with coffee and dark fruits backing it up. Flavor is coffee, dark chocolate, some roast. Roasted coffee builds up after several sips, but the rest of the finish is a bit too short.

Aug 19, 2008 On tap in Gaithersburg; pleasant black stout with minimal thin head; smells of coffee and chocolate; tastes very smooth with above notes and mysterious undercurrent which could be the chicory.

Aug 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Not much lacing to speak of. Roasty coffee and smoked malt made a decent aroma but the flavor was a little weak. Soft sweetness that finished quick and dry with a thin mouthfeel. Rather disappointing but different enough to interesting.

Aug 14, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Pours very typical black with a brown head. Mostly roasted malts, coffee and licorice in the nose. Body follows suit with loads of roasted character. Relatively light body, possibly a bit flat. I greatly enjoyed this brew but was not nearly complex as some of its bigger brothers can be.
