Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

Pours black as pitch with an off-brown head. Nice aroma of nuts, coffee, and caramel. Medium mouthfeel. Taste is quite good. Nutty with hints of chocolate and coffee. Remarkably smooth. A very good stout.

12oz bottle. Dark brown pour with medium brown head (into Spiegelau stout glass). Aroma of chocolate malt, coffee and earthy aroma (I presume that is from the chicory). Some peppery (chicory) flavor but mainly a dry earthy stout. Paired very well with dinner (chicken teriyaki). I think this beer would sell better if they called it Dogfish Head Stout, I think the Chicory in the name unnecessarily scares off the casual craft beer shopper (not me- I am more of a formal craft beer customer).

Pours a bubbly ruby-black with an average size light-brown head. Aroma of malt, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, spices, hops and a little sourness. Smells wonderful. Flavour follows the aroma but is a little mild-- it needs a little more bite. Medium body with a smooth finish.

A good dark beer with lots of coffee/chicory flavor. Sweet taste, malts overtake the hops. Medium body, not too thick. Tried this a while back so basing this review on memory, but I do remember liking this more than most other coffee stouts I tried. Not sure if Iíd buy it again though for the price, as its on the lower side for ABV%, and I prefer slightly heavier stouts in the 6-8% range. Glad I tried it though, as I am becoming a fan of DFH.

Old rating. Dark pour. Char, smoke, licorice, coffee, earthiness. Pretty decent bite. Packs a little punch, nice beer.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Opaque black pour with a big tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, grilled greens, pepper, star anise and toasted spices. Medium body. Tastes more of the same with roasted coffee and more spice coming out as it warms up. Bold and flavorful...canít believe this is only 5%.

Not a huge fan. The color is a bit dark and the flavor is strong but not my cup of tea

Bottle thanks to Alex. Pours a dark brown ruby with no head. The aroma is smoke, roasted malt. Thin mouthfeel with roast, smoke, licorice, good.

Draught. Inky black with small beige foamy head, strong coffee aroma, low carbonation, somewhat flat coffee dominant taste, thin body, longish finish with bitter coffee beans aftertaste. Good start disappointing finish.

"i definitely like licorice in my dark beer. it mellows the beer while adding another layer. i also love cascade hops. the chicory is weird, but i really liked it. this is a complex little beer, thatís for sure. havenít seen it in a while, but iíll buy it again if i do. 3/09 - great on tap as well. bigger body and complexity than a 5.2% beer suggests."

Not really my favorite offering from dogfish. Has a weird stale sort of flavor that I think is actually the chicory. Otherwise roasty and fairly dry.
