santoslhalper (166), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 21, 2008 Pours a deep, dark burgundy white a not quite bone white head. The smell is kinda light, but has noticeable hints of chocolate, coffee, and anise, with some piny hops. The taste on the other hand explodes with character the coffee is strong, the roast is powerful, the bitter is long and the aftertaste is clean as a freaking whistle. I think this a damn good, often overlooked stout. Easy drinking, inexpensive, yet creative, balanced, adventurous, complex, and, most importantly, enjoyable. A go-to sixer for me.
flatmatt (68), Northville, Michigan, USA Aug 20, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours black or dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma strong dark and milk chocolates, with coffee and dark fruits backing it up. Flavor is coffee, dark chocolate, some roast. Roasted coffee builds up after several sips, but the rest of the finish is a bit too short. docsteigs (126), USA Aug 19, 2008 On tap in Gaithersburg; pleasant black stout with minimal thin head; smells of coffee and chocolate; tastes very smooth with above notes and mysterious undercurrent which could be the chicory. 1_2many (194), Ohio, USA Aug 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Not much lacing to speak of. Roasty coffee and smoked malt made a decent aroma but the flavor was a little weak. Soft sweetness that finished quick and dry with a thin mouthfeel. Rather disappointing but different enough to interesting. dmtroyer (332), Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA Aug 14, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Pours very typical black with a brown head. Mostly roasted malts, coffee and licorice in the nose. Body follows suit with loads of roasted character. Relatively light body, possibly a bit flat. I greatly enjoyed this brew but was not nearly complex as some of its bigger brothers can be. unclemike (328), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Jul 27, 2008 Do these guys make any bad beers and the answer is no. The dark brown body was capped by a three finger thick head. The smell was coffee like as expected, since chicory is often used as a filler in coffee. The taste was much different than the smell suggested. There was a roasty bitterness here, but it was quite subdued, and was matched by a chocolate sweetness. Quite light on the palette for the style, and soft in texture. Easy drinking and approachable, but had it been a little stronger, it would have been far more memorable
