Czechsum Function is a pseudo Czech Pilsner, brewed with all pilsner malt and Czech Saaz hops. But instead of using traditional lager yeast to ferment the beer, our house ale yeast was used. Ironically Doggy yeast spits out similar flavors to some lager yeast so its perfect for the style. In the small town of Pilzen, the Czechs were the first to brew this style of beer during the mid 19th century before it took over world dominance of peoples taste buds. Despite what most typically know as pilsner these days, the original brew had a wonderful malt body with a soft but crisp herbal bitterness from the use of the towns local hops, Saaz. This beer follows that frame work with a nice clean malt body with a touch of honey sweetness and a nuanced spicey floral hop character in both the nose and flavor. This one is definitely for quaffing on a sunny spring day! This beer is great with the Dog Pile or our Fish Tacos.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2014 Dark golden color with a small, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of toast, honey, grass, light citrus and pils malt. Taste of toasted dough, grass, but a little diactyl.

On tap at the brew pub in Rehoboth Beach, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear pale-straw with minimal white froth and no proper head. The nose has continental hops paired with pale, grainy malts. The flavour has pilsneresque hops up front but grainy malts on the backside. The finish is mostly grains. On the palate, it is light in body with a thin texture and minimal carbonation. Overall, this is not a bad pilsner, but it is not great either. 2012-06-08

On tap @ the Brewpub-Golden/yellow pour w/a white head. Grassy/floral hop aroma. Light floral hop flavor, some yeast/bread dough/biscut, a little grassy, maybe a little citrus. Pretty light stuff, not really my thing, it was OK, but I wouldn’t expect to see it pop up on the draft list again.

Draft in Rehoboth - nice golden pour, medium lasting white head. Notes of grass, hops and yeasty goodness. Great on a hot day or after a day at the beach. Clever name as well.

Sample at the brewery restaurant - Some head but good lacing. Has a very smooth and sweet taste to it for a pilsner. Malty body and a smooth finish.

A very good pils on draft as a brewpub exclusive in Rehoboth. Czechsum Function pours a bright and crystal clear light golden color. The head is a bit minimal, but laces well down the glass. The nose is full of dry, spicy and earthy hops, that translate well into the body of flavors. The beer is balanced nicely with some light earthy malts. I got a little sweetness on the front of the flavors, but then the hops took over. This is a very refreshing and delicious beer. Other than the 90 Minute, this beer was almost perfect following a great day on the beach.
