COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Brewpub Exclusive was made by homebrewer Tom Bastian (TomDecapolis on RB) along with Sam and Jason and will make its way to the Great American Beer Festival as our Pro-am competition entry for 2011. Tom won the Philly Beer Week’s Extreme Homebrew Challenge in June and his prize was to be able to brew at our Rehoboth Pub. "There weren’t any bad beers," Sam says. "But Tom’s Death Metal stood out to me because you could taste or smell each of the special ingredients that he mentioned in the description, but none of them was overwhelming. Extreme for me is extremely flavorful, extremely memorable, not just extremely strong. And he had all of that." Death Metal is a big ole Imperial Stout with loads of Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops, a wide array of roasty toasty malts, honey, molasses, heaps of cold steeped coffee, and a whole mess of vanilla beans. The beer’s in-your-face punch earned it the name Death Metal and it lives up to the name with each of the flavorful ingredients head banging into your palate in succession.

On tap at DFH. This was one of 3 very limited stouts when I was there (World Wide Stout and a minted stout were also on), and this is indeed a very good stout. Strong coffee flavor and a decent hop profile (though I was surprised to see that it was at 120 IBUs). An excellent stout that they should consider producing more broadly, but probably won’t because there just just so many more new brews to be made!

On tap at the brewpub .... Jet black pour , big beige head , excellent lacing . Huge coffee aroma with some vanilla ,soy sauce and citrus hops . Strong espresso flavor upfront . Dark roasted malt and hop bitterness , some notes of vanilla and earthiness . Medium bodied and carbonation . Slight alcohol in the bitter hoppy , coffee finish . Very interesting and very strong overall . I liked it .

A: The beer pours very dark brown, almost black, with a small off-white head. S: The coffee aroma really comes through. There’s a bit of coffee grounds and a very mild acidity. Perhaps a hint of soy sauce with an almost spicy/cinnamon aroma. The vanilla is there a bit in the background. T: An almost espresso-like coffee flavor. Sort of bitter from all the roast with the same sort of spicy note. Plenty of dark chocolate dark chocolate along with vanilla and an earthy flavor and bitterness. M: The body is medium with medium carbonation. O: Other than the soy sauce on the nose, this was a pretty good beer. Nice coffee and vanilla character.

Had this beer in the brew pub in Delaware they wouldn’t let me fill a Take home container very much sucked but not the beer if you like coffee you will love this beer.big beer big flavors.

The aroma is awesome notes of coffee and vanilla with a nice blend of roasted malts and hops. The beer pours creamy dark brown with a decent caramel head. The body is creamy and light boozy sweet deliciousness with notes of vanilla and big molasses.

On tap at DFH. Poured a black color, with brown edges, and a smaller sized tan head. Different aromas with every deep smell - coffee, smoke, vanilla beans, roast, floral, hoppy, and pine. Tastes of coffee, vanilla, molasses, roast, pine, and floral hops. Some of my favorite in this one - I love coffee beers, hops, and Imperial Stouts, and this did not disappoint! Black coffee IPA!

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2011 Opaque black color with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, vanilla, roasted malts, smoke, floral hops, pine, cocoa, and some alcohol. Taste of roasted malts up front, with smoke, coffee, vanilla, piney hops, and some alcohol in the finish.
