j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Oct 30, 2009 Bottle at the release of Flaming Fury. This was an 05 Fort, and I’m glad I got to try it as I wasn’t about to shell out the $20 for a bottle to myself when just about everyone I’ve known who has tried it has commented on it not being worth the cash. This was however a welcome surprise as it was a rather solid beer, although being one with this much age on it, it could be a drastically different beast from what they’re putting out now. Pours a murky brown with a thin white head. Little chunky raspberry seed bits throughout, though I was towards the end of the bottle so the rest may not have had those. Raspberry, and clean vanilla aromas. Lots of raspberry flavor and sweetness. Cloying in fact, way too sweet. Finishes up with a bit more vanilla. CH47 (5), Kansas, USA does not count Oct 25, 2009 Appearance is peachy golden w/slight froth. Nose shows sherry, apple lots of fruit esters from the yeast but still smells a bit hot (I later learn it is 18%). Intro is almost instant strawberry puree with plenty of sweet lemon/orange peel zesty notes. Mid palate is quite sweet as it shows off the raspberries. I believe I have drank this bottle before its time. I will be cellaring another. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 14, 2009 Bottle. 25.4 oz. My 200th brew! Split with James and Sean. Pours orange/amber with a full, white head. Aroma of raspberries, hops, wheat, barley, and slight traces of alcohol. Warm, smooth mouthfeel. Full body with a crisp, clean finish. This is the best fruit beer I have ever tasted. Hides the alcohol extremely well, and is not too sweet. Excellent. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Oct 9, 2009 Reddish amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of varnish, raspberries, alcohol and mild funk. Taste is of alcohol right out of the gate. Flavor of malt, raspberries, alcohol with a tart raspberry finish. It’s decent, but just too much over the top as I felt like I was breathing fire after awhile. Enjoyit (1695), Vadum, Denmark Sep 28, 2009 Reddish amber of color with a beige head. An aroma of fruits, sour notes, bitter, dry and raisins. A flavor of raisins, dried fruits and dry in taste. nickd717 (1265), Palo Alto, California, USA Sep 14, 2009 2008 bottle from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in DC. Review #1001 for me. I wish I could also keep stats on brain cells killed, liver tissue destroyed, and hours of productivity wasted, but I have a feeling that even if I knew these totals, I would probably not slow down my pace of beer consumption. Beer is just that good. Anyway, this beer, Dogfish Head Fort, seems to be about as polarizing as it gets. Love it or hate it. Personally I thought it was good, although "love" is probably too strong of a word, reserved for things like Dark Lord, the movie "Dumb and Dumber," the Steelers, my girlfriend, authentic tacos al pastor, and Westvleteren 12. Pours a hazy orangish golden color with some reddish hues and a minimal white head. Aroma is sugar, raspberries, wild funk, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt, fresh raspberries, mildly tart funk, and alcohol. Medium-bodied and boozy on the palate. If you think of this as a liqueur, it’s actually pretty damn good and drinkable. As a beer, well, it’s very unique, and I admire that. petematte46 (212), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 3, 2009 Not sour at all. Malty and sweet with some dark fruit and cherries. Just can’t get past the sweetness. corby112 (671), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 28, 2009 Pours a dark cloudy amber/orange color with some golden ruby hues when held to a light source and a thin white foam head that quickly disappears leaving no lacing behind.
Sour funky aroma with a subtle hint of raspberry which is surprising, until you take a sip. Massive alcohol presence which makes this beer smell more like Mad Dog 20/20 than a beer.
Once again the alcohol dominates the flavor taking away from any semblance of other flavors including the faint hints of raspberry and sugar. Firey alcohol burn lasts throughout warming up the chest in the finish.
I thought that this beer was flat out disgusting and undrinkable. It is the only beer I have ever drain poured. I guess if you want to get wasted there could be some value in it but I would just stick with Mad Dog. Gross!
