COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The challenge of this year’s Beer Advocate Extreme Beer Fest was to truly push the boundaries of brewing by thinking beyond highly hopped and alcoholic beers and to brew a creative beer that’s 5% ABV or lower and retains its drinkability. We tackled the challenge ourselves by brewing this BeerAdvocate.com/Dogfish Head collaboration which is a Kombucha tea inspired brew flavored with organic lemon peel, organic Assam and Sencha teas then fermented by a cocktail of symbiotic organisms cross-pollinating each other. The result is a light bodied yet flavorful drink with a tart flavor somewhat similar to Belgian Lambic beers but also displaying hints of earthy tea. The beer will be available exclusively at Extreme Beer Fest (March 12, 2011) and Dogfish Head’s Weekend of Compelling Ales and Whatnot (April 1-3, 2011). Dozens of name entries were collected during the Happy Hour with BeerAdvocate & Dogfish Head on February 9, 2011. The final 8 entries were picked by Jason, Todd and Sam Calagione and then voted on by the BeerAdvocate online community. We hope you dig our Kombucha beer!

A: The pour is a relatively clear golden color with a small white head. S: There is a light funkiness to the nose that is accompanied by lots of lemon zest, tea, and a little bit of tartness. Lightly musty and earthy, perhaps a touch of mushrooms and dirt. T: The flavor is sort of bland and a bit watery. Lightly sour/tart with some tea and earth flavors. There is a little bit of lemon and lemon zest. Just a hint of green apple peel to it. M: Light bodied with medium carbonation. O: Sort of like a watered down version of the TEA/Veritas 008 from Lost Abbey.

Growler. Pours with a minimal white head and a hazed yellow body. Aromas of spice, earthy, funk, tea, tannic, jasmine, light acidity. Flavors are tart, floral, coriander, bready and malty, very dry. Lightly tart, dry, medium bubbles, easy drinking.

Sampled from the tap at EBF. Poured a hazy pale yellow with a thin white head that dissipated completely. Aroma had a good amount of spice with some funk a bit of a sweet grain and hints of tropical fruit and tea. Flavor had notes of tea, earthiness, funk and some backing sweet grains as well as a bit of underlying tropical fruits/citrus. A different and complex beer.

Pouring at the Saturday sessions of EBF. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Tea, wheat, soft toast on the nose. Not much going on though in the body. Sweet, touches of tea and a very faint sourness. Decent wheat, but kind of dull.

Growler from a nice gent from Beer Advocate. Pours yellow with no head. Nose has a light ea quality. Taste is sweet, with a light tea like, the kombucha punch doesn’t come through as much as straight up kombucha. I like this a lot though.

Serving: Draft at the Rehoboth Brewpub. It pours a cloudy dark yellow color with a slight, foamy, white head. The nose has a good bit of funk with a tart lemon note. The flavor reminds me of a light gueuze/Berliner Weisse combo. A little malt with a dry, almost wheat like note. Light in body with average carbonation leading to a clean finish. It’s a very easy drinking brew with nice complexity. Good for the hot summer months.

Like a slightly herbal wheat beer with a bit of tartness. I appreciate the character that DFH brings to their EBF beers every year, they are usually at least kind of drinkable and they certainly fit the goal of "different" that I wish more brewers would bring to the table.

Growler. Poured into a tulip glass a slightly cloudy hazed light orange yellow color with a slight white head that collars around the glass. LIght lemon zest with just an ever so small amount of herbal aroma. The taste is nice and light, as is the mouthfeel. Starts with a light on the palate lemon sourness that stays around the entire time of your drink. A touch bit of blandness though. Overall, a light and refreshing beer. The tea flavor is rather lost on me though as the lemon pretty much dominates it.
