Really should have been much colder. Not a bad pils. Pours dark yellow-gold with a huge head. Aroma is grainy and hoppy. Flavor was a little bitter. It was warm though. crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA May 28, 2006 Thanks to Degarth. Pours clear dark golden, big white head. Big sweet malty flavor, hoppy aftertaste, floral and bitter hops, grapefruity, but not great tasting to me at all. HopasaurusRex (195), Glen Ellyn, Illinois, USA May 27, 2006 I’ve actually made a homebrew version of an Imperial Pilsner and it tasted very similar to this. Not a beer I’d ever buy again, especially for this ridiculous price, but fun to try I guess. Hops are relatively subdued for supposedly being continually hopped. Lots of pils malt flavor and ample bitterness. Dhrjericho (66), Boise, Idaho, USA May 26, 2006 Pours a golden color. Aroma has wheat and a bit of grain. The flavor is stronger and has a nice alcohol & hop finish. Lite caramel and DMB finish. dirt bags. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA May 26, 2006 Nice looking brew, with a light orange, clear body and a small head. Yeasty and gently malted aroma, with hints of oranges. The citrus comes out in the flavor very strongly as well. Its quite sweet for a lager too, quite possibly the sweetest lager I’ve ever had. Refreshing bitter and hoppy finsih. Almost clean, but slightly too sweet/syrupy. The alcohol is pretty evident and slightly astringent. notalush (2627), Denver, Colorado, USA May 26, 2006 Thanks to zathrus13 for this bottle - nothing really pilsner-like about this beer; it’s more like a sweet IIPA or even a hoppy belgian made with pilsner malt - bright orange in color, with a thin ring of lace - sweet, light, berry-like fruit aroma, with touches of wildflowers and honey - a little overly sweet, but otherwise tasty - flowers/herbs to start (mostly lavender) - a honey-like sweetness settles in next, with fruity esters of berry, cherries - the noble hops start to shine through near the finish, with a strong spiciness that tries to bring about a clean, pilsner-like finish, but that sweetness just doesn’t want to let go of the tongue - honey and flowers stick around whether you want them to or not - a unique beer indeed, but I expect nothing less from DFH. Aroma / Appearance - There was a hint of orange peels, lemons and flowery hops in the nose with a tease of malt. The head was very faint and oily as it sat on top of an amber colored body.
Flavor / Palate - My first impression was of buttery notes mingled with vanilla, bananas and malt. The alcohol makes itself present immediately and does not let go throughout the session. Due to its density and mouthfeel, this feels more like drinking a port than a pilsener. Eventually once I had time to process I discovered this did actually have a hoppy grapefruit flavor. Excellent although I doubt I will be seeking it out as it only comes in larger bottles. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 25, 2006 Bottle shared with Blankboy, Hogtown Harry, and Dave, courtesy of Dave. Decent muted aroma - strong grains, alcohol, and sweet honey. Deep yellow, big white head, looks quite nice. Taste is fantastic! Tons of malt, lots of yummy bread/biscuit, medium bodied and finishes with a good dose of hops. Alcohol really compliments here. Sweet. Best served cold, I found as it warmed up, it became a little sweet and boozy. Really nice stuff, on par with the Sam Adams.
