2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Aged, room temp who knows possibly a few years or more. Pours a heady lacy dark sunset orange. Aroma of dusty sandy minerally toasted malt and stange peppery hops.Strange vinous aroma. Vegetably. Ive smelt off double ipas like this so not shure if this is quite to par for its worth. I would say fuck aging this as it is. It wont do it much good. Malty with citrus sweet caramel malts peppery bittering a little toast/roast malt. Not worth buying this bottle for 13 bucks unless it was newer. Allthough its abv may be worth its weight and overall it wasn’t a terrible experience, just feel like I didn’t get the most out of its potential. You know what Im sayin. Also this beer did not appear to be in 100 ibu territory at least an aged bottle such as mine.

"A nice beer that unlike Bitches Brew, wasn’t quite worth the price. Good amount of malt and a nice hoppy citrus backbone, with the lemons not being as prominent as I figured or hoped they’d be. With 60 and 90 minute ipa already in the line-up, this was needed to stand out more. big, full feel. hid the alcohol well."

Transfer from BA review on 5-17-13- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a lightly hazed golden-orange colored brew with a one finger white head. The head persists fairly well fading over time to leave a good level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is very citrusy with lots of grapefruit and orange peel. Along with these more bitter citrus smells are notes of some light caramel sweetness as well as hints of bready malts, some candied like sugar aromas, as well as a little bit of an herbal hop smell. Taste – The taste begins slightly sweeter with caramel and a sugared orange peel taste. While it starts sweeter there is certainly a presence of some nice grapefruit and herbal hop flavors upfront. As the taste advances the sugar dries some while some malt flavors of biscuit and a bit of a bready taste come to the tongue. All the while the bitter hoppiness of the brew gets stronger with an alcohol taste working its way onto the tongue. More grapefruit and lemon hop with a nice dose of an herbal hop taste mix with the malt and caramel to in the end leave a moderately citrus, bitter, but somewhat smoother taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew was on the medium to slightly lower side in terms of thickness for a brew of 10 % abv with a carbonation level that was just above normal. The two characteristics of the brew gave it a more crisp feel and helped make very drinkable. Overall – A smoother and rather easy drinking hopped brew with nice transitions between a sweetness upfront to a nice citrus hop base mixed with a little bit of boozy flavors and a decent malt backbone in the end. Quite tasty and rather easy drinking even at 10 % abv.

Really good, nice in the glass, aromas of orange and spice, some cinnamon-spiciness up front, followed by citrus and lots of well-balanced hopping. Big and complex.

Pours clear brown-amber with a medium beige head, good retention, very fine lacing. Honey, lemon, tart cherry, and dark fruity aromas with toast, and some light floral notes. Medium body, medium carbonation, a bit alcohol hotness. Medium sweet, a little citrus tartness, lingering medium bitter finish. Complex, big beer.

The aroma is hops, citrus a little spruce and some maltiness in the background. Pours a clear copper/orange/brown, with off white head, mostly diminishing, good lacing. The taste is a medium bitter. The body is light to medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter. Very good.
