COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Pours a cloudy gold with avg lacing. Strong piney aroma with lemon. Tastes sweeter than it smells. A good beer that tastes like a 10% beer....oh wait it is!

Pours an orange amber color with plenty of white head. Aroma of mild citrusy hops, fresh cut grass, pine. Flavor is abundantly citrusy, piney hops, honey.

750ml bottle into a shaker glass; served cold. Aroma: Citrus and pine hops. Not overpoweringly hoppy, but strong. Appearance: Moderately hazy amber body with a very thin cap of a head. Light lacing. Taste: A little pine hop, some citrus, probably lemon. Not overly bitter, but it has some bite. Palate: Medium body, medium prickly carbonation, moderate length on the finish and ends on piney, gently bitter hops. Overall: Nice. Not super bitter. Alcohol content is well-masked. Not overly lemony either. Just good all around.

Pours a nice and hazy burnt orange with a fluffy off white head. A good bit of biscuity malt aroma on the nose, lots of bitter lemon notes, citrusy hops, lemon rind, and a nice floral note. Lots of lemon on the taste as well, a nice fresh lemon and lemon rind bitterness, a little sweetness, there’s a nice ripe berry note, and a nice bit of malt in the back. The lemon is balanced nicely, not a hop bomb, but probably past its prime.

At a tasting, thanks tlahav, small bubbly head, hazy deepish orange colour, aroma of orange marmalade and grain, alcoholic flavour with sweet maltiness and a touch of tobbaco and a heavy coarse herbal grapefruit bitterness. Way too old.

I thought this was a decent beer. I love trying dogfish head's experiments; sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them... But they're always decent. This one is citrus on the nose and finish, hops with some malt in the middle. Alcohol well hidden and creeps up quickly! I'd drink this one again.

Clear amber. Aroma of mash from a brewery. Seriously potent hop aroma. Sips slightly spicy and malty, then followed by middle sweetness of honey and finished off medium sweet and with a touch of lemon. High abv is masked as with most dogfish brews. Dangerously sweet and smooth double ipa..great brew!

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Tom L. Slightly hazy amber. Aroma of malt and stale hops, a bit piney, and a bit of fruitiness. Sweetish malty flavor with citric notes and a bitter finish with alcohol and hops, kinda stale. Medium-bodied. Too alcoholic and probably not so fresh.

Hazy orange pour into an IPA glass. Nice head and lacing. Nose is heavy on the citrus, with lemon at the forefront. Taste is also heavily lemon, although it remains clearly an IPA, and not a shandy sort of flavor. Alcohol is totally hidden behind the taste. Rich mouthfeel. Really enjoyable beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
