2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle - Hop and a slight lemon smell to it. Golden brown color. Hop and strong sweet flavor on this one. Doesn’t taste much like lemon but that is probably where the sweetness comes from.

Draft. Orange color with little white head. Citrus and grapefruit aroma. Very strong fruity taste, lemon and grapefruit. Hop bomb that hides the alcohol well. Enjoyed it a lot.

Bottled. Pours pale amber with an average off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, grapefruit, lemon zest and piney notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry, with alcohol notes and nice biitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carb. A great DIPA

A citrus bomb! Lots of centennial hops on the smell and taste. Notes of orange, lemon, and honey linger. Big beer.

Interesting idea that doesn't quite meet the extreme standards normally associated with dfh. Great appearance, v good nose, flab falls body not bad n finish is marked by clash of flavs leaving medicinal cast ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Found this gem at a local pub. When it arrived in a one liter bottle bottle I was even more surprised. Great, great, great. I always have a bottle in my fridge now. Just in case.

An old style ale. Heavy malts hid the booze. Similar to a British ipa. Minimal hops and the lemon gives it a sweetened twist on the otherwise malt heavy flavor. Really good and not what I was expecting. RIP RJ

On tap at the Red Hot. Hazy orange color. Scent is kind of dank. With some oregano. Taste is nice and hoppy. Some lemon flavor. A little booze. Good beer.

Copper colored hazy pour w/ a tall dense white head with nice lacing. Big hop aroma with some warm notes that suggest a large gravity behind it. A good amount of citrus a hint of what I might call lemon zest is just lightly available along with a little bit of graham cracker and then unfortunately when your nose starts to blend it all I get a hint of soapy character. Palate is aggressively carbonated and well coated. Flavor is almost a touch sweet in their with a finish reminder of a lightly lemon candy on top of a lingering grassy bitterness. The front flavors include some sweeter grapefruit notes. There’s something just different about this, whether its the odd play of the lemon that goes between sweet candy, sour, and soapy at different times or something else I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Either way I enjoyed the bomber.
