COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

At a tasting, thanks tlahav, small bubbly head, hazy deepish orange colour, aroma of orange marmalade and grain, alcoholic flavour with sweet maltiness and a touch of tobbaco and a heavy coarse herbal grapefruit bitterness. Way too old.

I thought this was a decent beer. I love trying dogfish head's experiments; sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them... But they're always decent. This one is citrus on the nose and finish, hops with some malt in the middle. Alcohol well hidden and creeps up quickly! I'd drink this one again.

Clear amber. Aroma of mash from a brewery. Seriously potent hop aroma. Sips slightly spicy and malty, then followed by middle sweetness of honey and finished off medium sweet and with a touch of lemon. High abv is masked as with most dogfish brews. Dangerously sweet and smooth double ipa..great brew!

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Tom L. Slightly hazy amber. Aroma of malt and stale hops, a bit piney, and a bit of fruitiness. Sweetish malty flavor with citric notes and a bitter finish with alcohol and hops, kinda stale. Medium-bodied. Too alcoholic and probably not so fresh.

Hazy orange pour into an IPA glass. Nice head and lacing. Nose is heavy on the citrus, with lemon at the forefront. Taste is also heavily lemon, although it remains clearly an IPA, and not a shandy sort of flavor. Alcohol is totally hidden behind the taste. Rich mouthfeel. Really enjoyable beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The lemons are very prominent. Not sure lemon is a good flavor match for a hoppy IPA. Still, I’m going to finish this bottle.

Bottle. Poured into a snifter. Huge citrus aromas. Poured a hazy yellow with a nice thick white head. The lemon really complements the citrus and pine character of the hops. Reminded me of a shandy with a bitter aftertaste but good. Really enjoyed this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thanks for sharing, Eric! Pours murky orange amber with white head, some lacing. Aroma: whoa, caramel malty sweetness. Plus lemon. Maybe orange, but lemon is what comes to mind. Taste: awfully sweet, caramel and citrus - basically a lemon head but without the tartness you might expect. Full body, creamy texture. Overall: drinks more like a so-so barley wine than a do-so double ipa. But I do love me some Robert Johnson, so I guess I’m glad this was made.

750mL bottle Bottled On 10/21/2013. So, right then. Nose is hoppy, just hugely floral, with resin, juicy oil, lemon/orange/light grapefruit, some pepper, rind,/peel. Pours deep, clear orange with light carbonation and a creamy, thick beige head. In the mouth, very oily with some citrus juice squeezed in, medium bitterness but relatively dry as far as gravity goes, a little booze seeping through but very little. Has the rough-/coarseness of their 90mins without going overboard on the astringency or even getting rubbery, slightly warms the chest with volume but otherwise I’d say they’ve nailed the ‘big beer’ aspect. The juicy/oily character brings out a wonderful white grape/must character with peach, apricot, some white pepper and something guava/kiwi-y in the middle. A very drinkable medium body, dangerously so! Super smooth. Love this, though I suspect its slight age prevented me from experiencing the Centennial deluge. Worth hunting down!

Pours a light orange. Has a unique aroma of sweet malt and slight citrus hops. Taste starts malty with some citrus hops, caramel and spices. Aftertaste is a mix of light hops and heavy malt.
