2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 sloth (2103) - Ceciltucky, Co., USA - AUG 19, 2011
Large white head with good retention and a nice, sticky lacing. Hazy, copper orange colored brew. Nose is lemony with notes of bandaid. Medium body, an almost spritzy carbonation, light oilyness and astringency. Overly sweet malts for a DIPA that are backed by off putting phenolic notes, band aid being the main distraction. The lemon does,nt interact well with it either. Finish is a bit sweet with no real hop bite to speak of. Bummer. 750 from statelineliquors
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 AirForceHops (1116) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - MAY 26, 2012
Picked up at Julio’s a few months ago. I like the label. Very Tim Burton like. Compared this side-by-side with Firestone Double Jack. Used a snifter. Aroma is citrus hops, with fresh lemon. And a strange undefined order I can’t really place if it’s grain or burnt malt?? I was hoping the lemons would add something to this DIPA, kind of didn’t. Pine and lemon notes with the booze being significant. Not sure how anyone says this is balanced. Entirely too bitter and with the ABV so profound, I felt like I spent too much money on this bottle. I been sampling many DIPA as of late, but for me…. It’s just not my thing. Firestone Walker is a better buy for this style.

A - Pours a cloudy golden-orange with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some good lace.
S - Aroma is a full of citrus and tropical hops with some grapefruit, orange, and lemon, with pine hops and some caramel and lightly bready malts.
T - Starts off with citrus and tropical hops with grapefruit and orange flavors with some lemon peel, bitterness, and some sweet caramel malt. Through the middle, some pine hops and more bitterness comes through alongside some more caramel and lightly bready malts. The finish is a mix of tropical hips with a bit of pine, bitterness, lemon peel, and some sweet malts.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and bitter finish.
D - Very drinkable. The lemon adds a nice element to the other citrus hops flavors. The balance is good and the hop profile is nice.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 PhillyCraft (641) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 10, 2012
Bottle. 25.4 oz. Popped this while listening to the beer’s namesake, "Hellhound On My Trail." Pours a glowing ruby-orang with an insanely massive, foamy, soapy white head which slowly fades and leaves a nice snowy mess of lace. The aroma is pretty odd on this--perhaps fitting for such an odd notion for a beer; the dry, Centennial hops overwhelm the nose at first, but soon give way to musty, farmhouse funk, lemon zest, and soft hints of honey and vanilla. There’s also an odd hint of wet dog. Perhaps it is a sign of the hellhound! Flavor is heavily bitter dry hop, pine, and boozy lemon juice. Tight, dry, somewhat tart palate with a medium body to support it all. Finishes with a bunch of tangy hops and even a bit of citrusy lemon and orange notes. Decent double IPA from the old off-centered alesmiths. I guess, sometimes, I’m just not off-centered enough.

Bottle thanks to pellegjr. Pours a hazy orange/dirty blonde color with a thin beige head. Maltier in the aroma than expected, caramel, floral albeit grassey, and light hints of lemon. An interesting ’twinge’ at first sip... sort of a spicey citrus dandelion thing along with seemingly aged caramel malts. Then the burn of the abv hits and its like an aged barleywine followed up with a shot of turpentine. I wonder, is it from the dry hops or the lemon? Maybe it ages poorly? After warming up a bit it gets a little more palatable, but it just never really got going here... sort of like taking a digger on the second hurdle.

Pours orange with a large, dense, off-white head. Smells citrusy with some lemon notes and a punch of caramel like malt. Taste is bitter with some citrus and lemon zest notes. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Dogfish Head Hellhound On My Ale finishes with some lemon peel bitterness. Best fresh, if even possible anymore.

On draft in a snifter. Pours a hazy orange yellow with little head and nice lacing. Aroma is bright pine and citrus. Flavor is pine, grapefruit, caramel, and some astringency. Somewhat syrupy and rather chewy. Decent but not amazing.
