11 oz bottle, Andersons, $13.99/4. I bought 8, and Iím rating the second; the first one was apparently infected, with a strong flavor note of Band-Aid. I donít know if my second was from the same pack as the infected one because I removed them all from it, I certainly hope that entire 4-pack isnít infected. Dark ruby pour, viscous, with a smaller white head. Aroma is unfortunately dominated by the peat smoke, even though itís not all that strong. Flavor is heavy and sweet, with more of the peat smoke; caramel. To their credit, the 11% is completely imperceptible; some 6% beers have more alcohol presence than this one. Medium body with copious frothy carbonation; sticky. This is one of the more annoying things to me about what Dogfish Head insists on doing so often--adding all these fancy upscale deScriptors and flavors in their deScriptions and then only adding a barely-to-non-perceptible quantity of them. Vanilla? Maple syrup? OAK?! Where?? RB currently has this at 95th percentile in barley wines, which is pretty wacky; Iíve had a lot of much better BWís than this one, and I think that if people didnít kiss DFHís ass so much this would be rated significantly lower. I usually love big, heavy, complex beers, but this is pretty sad and one-dimensional for such a highly rated brew.

Pours a hazy brown from a bottle, thin white head, very minimal lacing. Maply smell, smokey flavor with vanilla notes as well. Good beer.

Tastes of vanilla, oak, a hint of smokiness (though not so much as I wouldíve liked), and booze. Good beer.

12 oz bottle. 1/14/16. Aroma is peat. Taste is oak. Very oaky. Some peat. Touch of vanillin. Very thin for 11%.

2016 bottle poured into snifter. Pours a clear, red amber with a thick, stubborn khaki head and persistent lacing. Aroma is oak, vanilla, cherry, light peat. Flavor is vanilla and a touch of caramel up front, and a malty finish with hints of sweet cherry on the end. The faintest hint of bitterness lingers on the palate. Mouthfeel is slick and a tad creamy. This is a hybrid scotch ale and barleywine profile, and is very good. Not as robust a palate as you find in other Dogfish Head varieties, but delicious and worth a try.

Aromas of soft maple, lightly smoky, cherry. Clear bronze with a mostly lasting beige lacing. Smoky, somewhat sweet, malts dominate. Medium-full bodied.

Kind of a funky sweet smell, with nothing I can quite pin down. Deep amber color, almost purple. Has a sweet almost cherry flavor, with sort of a clove or spice flavor. I think this changes nicely as it warms up.

12 oz from Samís for 4.89. Pours clear copper with a massive foamy white head. Sweet aroma with fruit, vanilla and oak notes. Taste is a bit more subdued, with a bit of citrus hop up front, a hint of peat, smokiness on the end. Body is average, maybe slightly creamy. This beer is hard to put into one category. It has some characteristics of a barleywine and also a scotch ale. I do know one thing though; it is damn good and I want more.

12 oz. bottle. Bottled 12/22/15. Pours a thick, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, with heavy lacing, over a clear, bubbly copper (SRM 17) body.......nose is sugar sweet, with heavy dried fruits including fig, raisin, mango, light juniper, pine notes, light smoke, balance to the malts.....taste is heavily sweet, with juniper, pine, dried fruits including fig, mango, finishing with light bitterness......mouth feel, heavy sticky, syrupy, chewy body, alcohol heat present, carbonation makes a creamy mouthful. This is a very sweet, alcoholic beer with the sweetness being a bit too much. The other characteristics of malts and hops are quite hidden, with the hops especially so. Maybe a few years of aging would improve. BJCP 7/3/12/4/5
