3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 9, 2003 Cider-colored, and yet nearly opaque. Steady stream of carbonation builds up a ring of foam. Nose is initially smoky, with underlying layers of bourbon, oak chips, cherry, and alcoholic depth. There's quite a lot going on with this beer, one of the more challenging I've encountered lately. Medium bodied. They're not lying...maple syrup and vanilla flavors, also tea, and a healthy dose of alcohol. Reminds me of Bell's 5000, although not as sweet. I remember cringing unexpectedly from the alcohol at one point, which surprised me considering how they hide it in WWS 18%. I'll probably revisit later on.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz from Sam’s for 4.89. Pours clear copper with a massive foamy white head. Sweet aroma with fruit, vanilla and oak notes. Taste is a bit more subdued, with a bit of citrus hop up front, a hint of peat, smokiness on the end. Body is average, maybe slightly creamy. This beer is hard to put into one category. It has some characteristics of a barleywine and also a scotch ale. I do know one thing though; it is damn good and I want more.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle. Bottled 12/22/15. Pours a thick, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, with heavy lacing, over a clear, bubbly copper (SRM 17) body.......nose is sugar sweet, with heavy dried fruits including fig, raisin, mango, light juniper, pine notes, light smoke, balance to the malts.....taste is heavily sweet, with juniper, pine, dried fruits including fig, mango, finishing with light bitterness......mouth feel, heavy sticky, syrupy, chewy body, alcohol heat present, carbonation makes a creamy mouthful. This is a very sweet, alcoholic beer with the sweetness being a bit too much. The other characteristics of malts and hops are quite hidden, with the hops especially so. Maybe a few years of aging would improve. BJCP 7/3/12/4/5

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Tap and Handle last week. Brown appearance with a white head. Smoky, peaty malt aroma with juniper berries, maple syrup and oak. The flavor adds mild bitterness and notes of tobacco and vanilla with a lingering finish. Medium body. Interesting barley wine, it’s different.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Malty smell with a touch of alcohol. Taste is very malty, mild alcohol (hides the ABV fairly well), dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, oak, and dark caramel. Full body with low to medium carbonation and very slight foam.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz bottle bottled 2012B (Feb I think) pours a clear ruby/caramel with a thin head. Aroma has big notes of dark fruits, dark caramel, smoky wood, and a touch of maple. Taste is mildly sweet but not cloying. Caramel, subtle maple syrup, oak, and slight smoke at the end. Medium-full body with low carbonation. Creamy/syrupy mouth feel.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dont know how to categorize this beer. I found it to be more like a strong ale or porter rather than most barleywines that I tried. Dark brown with a thick head and heavy body. Tastes of malt, maple, vanilla, brown sugar which offsets the bitterness that comes with the strong alcohol content. I liked this flavor more than some of the other "$3-4 a beer" DFH brews. This was maybe the 5th or 6th one that I sampled from DFH that was 9% or over. I would definitely try again.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Wow. Very scotch-like, woody and full of vanilla. Mostly bourbon aroma. The CO2 escaping from re-capped bottle just played a little song for me at lip/cap interface, so it even sounds good, too : ). Bottle from 11/04/13 - try it aged if you can control yourself....
