santoslhalper (166), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA May 20, 2008 Vintage 2004. Beautiful clear fire tones with a thin, bubbly off white head. Still lots of carbonation after 4 years. Strong scotch nose, with wood, vanilla, chocolate, fruity, caramel, tobacco, hazelnut, butterscotch and musty notes. The taste is very complex and intriguing. At first, the alcohol is very strong, with bourbon, oak, and tobacco notes. The next thing you notice is a powerful astringent like sweetness, with hints of caramel and chocolate. It finishes long and hot, with a fantastic fruity brightness that is similar do an oak-y Noir. Very interesting to see how this one aged. Fresh I thought it was a mess, and after 4 years, I still think it needs a little more time.
imadeadguy (128), Westampton, New Jersey, USA Aug 21, 2008 2004 Vintage 12oz. Hazy red copper color with minimal white head. Aromas of caramel, fruit, and malt. Flavors are mixed with peaches, oak, warming alcohol, and a bit of sweet malt. Intense flavors and really different. mgermani (583), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Aug 20, 2008 Pours a lovely clear orange with a short-lived layer of foam. Incredible sweet barley aroma - wow! Dessert wine and light alcohol. Tastes very oily at first, bitter and hoppy, but it opens up into a thick goopy sweet malt taste - you can definitely taste the peat. Plenty of alcohol in the finish, peppery and lingering. Very complex. Body undercarbonated but chewy. What a real treat - sipped this over the course of a few hours. Last of a trade a year and a half ago with Thaichile - many thanks! Beware of this one... it packs a punch.
Hazy in appearance, nice delicat head, sweet and balanced with a smoky peaty undertone. Very well made, but very strong. gotohelunc (347), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Hazy, redish brown color, small white head. Nice full boozy nose of bourbon, honey, and hops. Flavors meld that same bourbon character with smoke and vanilla syrup. Finishes with an interesting sharp acidic bite, then a nice warm alcoholic warmth. Good, interesting, strong barleywine. kseecs16 (513), Westmont, Illinois, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a wispy off-white head. Rich sweet woody aroma of oak and bourbon. Hints of smoky charred malts. Full sweet flavor with some roast smoke hints bitter lingering after taste, a pleasant heat. Creamy and mouthfilling with some fizzy bite.
