3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BOLTZ7555 (2378) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - FEB 1, 2008Typical flavor characteristics of DFH...OVERLY SWEET!!! Color is vibrant orange/brown with minimal head. Aroma is sticky sweet with a flavor to match. Oak, vanilla, caramel, and toffee...definitely a high caliber brew but nothing from them (other than the 120 Minute IPA) has had the "shock and awe" factor. Premium price...try anything from this brewery and you’ll see the similarities.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 icehawk (122) - Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, USA - MAY 14, 2013
Smokey, sweet, and boozy aroma. Earthy, smokey taste, sweet, with a slight alcohol taste at the finish. Wonderfully unique. Smoke comes across in a very different way than other smoked beers. Overall great.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 snoworsummer (353) - baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAY 4, 2013
From a bottle. Sweet, thick, and rich. Tastes like chocolate, syrup, raisins. Smells like malt and dried fruits. Medium body.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Bière-Luc (296) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 28, 2013
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bigbish (415) - California, USA - APR 27, 2013
This is my kind of beer. Great malt flavor, just a touch of smokiness. Very smooth with a slightly sweet overtone. The flavor is very complex, hard to describe other than delicious.
4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 sharkweek (59) - Statesboro, Georgia, USA - APR 24, 2013
Poured from a bottle into a DFH Signature glass a dark mahogany with two and half fingers of white head. The aroma is a light sweetness. When tasting this one you can definitely detect the oak and vanilla. There is also a light banana taste that you can find in the background. This was my first barley wine and it was really a very nice treat.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ryanscourt (278) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 22, 2013
In line with dogfish’s unique beers. Ilike how they did this one. Nice unique oak/smoke flavor. This is balanced by the fuity character that is both present in the aroma and in the body. Good lasting oaked dryness. This leaves ya wanting a nice grilled piece of meat. A great companion to a good steak. Nice body with very enjoyable lingering flavors.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Sperine (155) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 19, 2013
Bottle. This was supposed to be shared between four people, but I was the only person who appreciated the intense smoky flavor. I am a huge fan of DFH's inventiveness, and this is why.
