Very hoppy but the malts make it really tasty. Chocolatey and coffee flavors mixed with the carmel malts very well. Will have this one again. thehoff (569), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 22, 2009 Nice and dark brown/black with nice tan head. Smells of deep dark malts, nuts, molasses, coffee, chocolate. The taste is that of a mocca espresso. Nice and nutty in the finish. Sensational beer. The finish is long and very coffeesque. Wonderful wonderful stuff. It is complex yet simple. soccer290 (140), Highland Park, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 22, 2009 12 oz bottle. Beer 2 of the ’rating beers that I’ve already had’ quest. Pours a dark brown color wit ha half finger high off white head that is the epitome of what I consider a brown ale. Smells of coffee, chocolate, some malt, perhaps molasses (though I’m not positive what molasses smell like), and hops. Tastes of coffee, sugars, chocolate, and a tiny bit of hops. Very smooth going down, and leaves a fresh coffee build in your mouth. Overall, possibly my favorite brown ale, only competing with Bells Best Brown Ale. Damico (201), Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2009 I think this delicious brown ale is a little harsh on the palate, but delicious overall. I only say that because with an ABV of 7.2, that booziness comes through on the brown ale moreso than in comparison to other like Newcastle. Sam would absolutely want it that way, being proud of his beverages being over 7% for the norm.It is also more bubbly. joebudzjoe (236), Connecticut, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 19, 2009 Updated: Oct 22, 2009Bottle. Poors a deep brown body with a creamy tan head. Strong hops and malts create complex tones: fig, sweet tobacco and licorice. There is a snarl of alcohol with this beer, but it adds sharpness to the palate. Damn good beer. fluffy (229), Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 17, 2009 pours dark brown with a lacy white head that sustains for quite a while. can definitely smell the raisins and brown sugar. taste is of figs, dates, caramel and butter. really nice balance of maltiness and hops. some smokiness in the background along with a very mild orange, grapefruit and ginger. quite tasty, reminding of great quality copper or red ale as well as a brown. mikalooch (172), , New Jersey, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 16, 2009 Bottle. Aroma Is malt with a nutty underpinning to it. Deep dark brown pour with generous beige head. very unique flavor, hops, sweet malt, caramel, and plum, very well rounded. Medium to thick on the palate, bit of alcohol is present but not overpowering. I really like this. ben4321 (1061), Rockville, Maryland, USA
