17-Jun-07 (12 oz bottle: Purchased 07-Jun-07 for $1.90 at Liquid Solutions in Tigard, OR) Assertive aromas of roasted malts, molasses, dark fruits, dark chocolate and coffee jump out of the glass and aggressively convey that this is no ordinary brown ale, though the beer’s name of Indian Brown Ale is also a strong hint. On the palate, this is intensely flavored for a brown ale, with plenty of medium-dark roast, chocolate, brown sugar, sweet black fruits, and blackstrap molasses balanced by a good dose of moderately bitter, classic hop flavor, plus yeast notes and light tartness in the background for added complexity. Other than the increased roasty bitterness in the long-lasting finish, this beer is fairly linear. Medium-full bodied on the palate with medium carbonation. Dark brown in color and fairly clear with ruby highlights toward the edge, this beer is capped by a small, light-tan head that dissolves to a wide ring and fails to leave behind anything more than a few spots of lace on the glass. Dogfish Head has shown that brown ales can indeed be packed with full-throttle flavor, and complex enough for contemplative sipping.

Love the complexity and the nice simple finish on this beer. One of my ball time favorites. Nothing stands out to much. Some times I wish it was more hoppy, but it’s all in the balance.

bottle. Brown with one finger head. Excellent hoppiness with all the rich malt that you’d expect from a brown. Great.

Bottle at Cooper’s in Chicago. It’s been a while. Pours a deep, dark brown color with a tan head and some lacing. Aroma is roasty, hoppy, pine. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, nutty, caramel, roasty, toast, bitter pine hops, with a clean, nutty finish. A beer ahead of its time it would appear. Very nice.

On-tap in the Rogue Pub on Union St San Fransisco: 3rd Feb 2013. Thought it looked like a Stout, dark brown with a good foaming head. Malty molasses hit the nose and mouth, this has a sweet front: plenty of malty flavours as you dig into the brew. I got coffee and dark chocolate along with some dried candid fruit notes. Good body thickness and feel to the beer, a pleasant and easy to drink brew.

Nuts, coffee, chocolate, and a little funk in the aroma that breathed off after a minute. Bittersweet flavor, with coffee, brown sugar, and some nutty roast. Hoppy, bitter finish. Good, but not great--I was a little disappointed given the rating.

Pours cola brown with a small light tan head. Aroma is heavy molasses and light coffee. Taste is very smooth but not overbearing molasses up front transforming into a creamy latte mid palate and hopp bitterness that faintly comes through in the finish. Alcohol portrays itself sweetly. Truly complex brown.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2013 Bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown. Nice tan head with low retention and lacing. Smells of mocha, espresso, raisins, toffee, malt. Tastes of espresso, mocha, slight raisin or fig, medium malt. Low carbonation, subtle crisp. Weak creamy finish. Nice twist on a brown ale.

Probably the best brown ale I’ve had so far. Great copper color, thick head after pour. Very sweet & refreshing! 3rd place on my ballot at Beer Night IV on 6/7/13.

Gorgeous dark brown body accompanied by a thick cappuccino froth. The nose is surprisingly light, considering the bold coffee and chicory notes to the hearty flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
