dirkules (611), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 27, 2006 Root Beer brown pour from the bottle with a full fuzzy white head. Smells sweet with a big malty roast and some hints of molasses and licorice. A slightly sour palate with some brown sugars some skunkiness and a big of hop. Alcohol is very present... giving me flashbacks to the Worldwide Stout! Mellows a bit after a few more sips. Not the best of the Dogfish, but a welcome addition to my ratings collection. I’ll stick to the Hazelnut from Rogue.
ucusty (1062), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Sep 4, 2008 Very dark brown pour. Brown sugar on the nose Rich, nutty, hoppy and full of sweet malts. Indulgence (77), Ajo, Arizona, USA Sep 3, 2008 What can u say about DFH? They make extraordinarily well thought out beers. I have yet to come across a bad beer from them. This is a unique complex mixture of everything that they say, molasses, burnt sugar, toffee, hops and more. A beautiful color of dark brown with reddish highlights on the fringes, excellent lacing and head, what else can you say? They are at the top of their game for sure.... it went well with the franks and beans that I had too. BeerBaron617 (112), Novi, Michigan, USA Sep 2, 2008 So, I had heard about this on a youtube video of a tasting, and I figured it sounded good. Well I was right, this stuff is amazing. It pours a very dark brown, with an almost light brown/offwhite head. The aroma is strong, with some licorice and sugar on the finish. And OH the taste. It’s of raisins and burnt sugar, with a hint of alcohol, and some great maltiness on the finish. This is exactly what I expected when Dogfish Head decides to perfectly blend two different styles into one great brew. Cheers! PolakPorter (74), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 Very dark for a brown, it’s bordering a porter. Smell is caramel dominated with some chocolatey coffee goodness tossed in for good measure. Bigger and thicker than most browns. Incredibly tasty. Give this one a try! cking (727), North Canton, Ohio, USA Aug 31, 2008 As with some other DFH offerings, this beer took a few attempts for me to fully appreciate the contents. I was slightly put off by my first bottle, but after enjoying the remaining bottles over a week plus It did eventually grow on me. And abrupt, in your face aroma of burnt toast, coffee, cream, and roasted nuts hits you immediately. There is also a strong noble hop presence. Rich brown color with a deep red tint. A billowing tan head that ultimately settles leaving a stream of heavy lacing. Heavy on the palate, very bitter with a rolling creaminess. Assertive flavor that slaps your face before it settles down. Burnt malts that are both nutty and sweet. Bitter coffee and floral noble hops. Dark chocolate with brown sugar. Gritty and abrasive, this beer needs time to be enjoyed. Not an everyday choice for me, but once a year should do the trick.
