rmalloy (177), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA Jun 19, 2007 Interesting, but not great. Very dark brown. Nose of molasses, coffee, and prunes. Roasted malt and hop bitterness attack hard and dig in. Some caramelized flavor, but not enough. Notes of molasses, raisins, and chocolate get overwhelmed by French-roast coffee. The texture is too thin to support the roastiness--a beer like this needs to be thick and creamy like a stout. Indeed, the predominant flavors are stout-like. This beer lacks finesse. It’s highly rated because of its punch.
Hinez57 (114), Clinton, Mississippi, USA Aug 22, 2008 Am I a little high in my rating, yes, but who knew a brown could be so good!? Wonderful nose of chocolate with roasted notes. Nice lasting head on top of standard brown. Mmmm big toffee, caramel, coffee, and molasses flavors mingle with other subtle malt flavors. Hoppyness isn’t really that evident, but is obviously there, as the clean finish and perfect balance prove. Unexpected full mouthfeel rivaling a good IPA or Belgian. Overall wonderfully drinkable and delicious... Go Brown! BeerBlitz (47), Roslyn, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 21, 2008 12 oz bottle poured into a standard pint glass. Dark brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma loaded with molasses, but also coffee and chocolate. Taste is full of molasses and just plain brown-ness (chocolate malts maybe). Somewhat creamy mouthfeel which makes it easy to quaff. Finishes quickly with little aftertaste. I’ve had quite a few of these in the past, and plan to do the same in the future. Good session beer. Steinface (65), Hatfield, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 16, 2008 Very dark brown pour, 1/4 inch quick fading head. Nutty aroma, Nutty taste, too much malt. The alcohol really stands out the most as far as taste goes. Okay nqualls (113), Tennessee, USA Aug 14, 2008 6 pack of 12 ozers from Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville. Poured an ultra deep brown with a creamy and puffy tan head. Aroma is of coffee and molasses. Flavor reflects the aroma, with a little hop balance. Well carbonated and creamy to the palate. Another brilliant DFH beer. This is by far my favorite brewery. ScottB (35), Jacksonville, Florida, USA Aug 14, 2008 Poured a deep brown with a fluffy beige head. HUGE nose of coffee and molasses is echoed in the mouth along with a slight hoppy zing.Sweet finish.
