obguthr (707), Poquoson, Virginia, USA May 26, 2007 Updated: Feb 16, 2008 There is a moderately strong aroma of oak and cedar. It is dark mahogany brown with a thin yellow head and coated the glass rather nicely. The flavor is robust and strong with a great balance of smoke and hops. Blackberry is also noted. It finishes with more smoke and dark choclate which lingers a while, but not too much. It was perhaps a bit too smoky. I’d say it is rather stoutish, but very pleasant. Finally, a DfH that lives up to its reputation!
thejoeshow (130), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 6, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a deep dark mahogany color with a big hearty tan head that has amazing retention and wonderful lacing. This is one of the most perfect looking beers I have ever seen. The nose is VERY complex. I get aromas of chocolate malt, coffee, a slight hint of wood and you can even pull the brown sugar in the description out. Smell wonderful. WOW...this doesn’t taste like anything I have ever drank before. It is very malty and then the hop bitterness kicks in, then it finished like a porter and leaves a nice roasted coffee and chocolate flavor lingering in the back of your throat. This beer is wonderful! Another winner from an amazing brewery!!! Dandman629 (13), Ashburn, Virginia, USA Oct 6, 2008 This is a damn good beer. The scent is a familiar scent of a stout I used to get at a local brewery (since the recipe has changed it has never quite been the same). You can smell the bitterness of the hops and barley with a hint of coffee. The color is a dark brown a few shades below a stout. The palate is amazingly smooth and creamy. Finally the taste is exactly what it says on the bottle. This is an all around great beer! beergod! (44), Houston, Texas, USA Oct 5, 2008 This ale pours a very dark brown with a nice tan head. The nose is of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and caramel. Taste is pretty layered. Unsweetened chocolate, raisins, roasted coffee, and good hop backbone. Full bodied and not a wimpy brown. Paired it with a Tastykake & it was Great! craftycarl21 (211), South Hero, Vermont, USA Oct 3, 2008 pours a reddish brown with decent head and evident carbonation. Aroma light, mostly of hops and malt. Flavor is very nice, with a touch of honey and roast to compliment the malt. Nice palate, great for the style. kapusta (72), Dover, Delaware, USA Sep 28, 2008 Very nice light brown color. Aroma is malty, with a touch or sweetness & roast grains. Flavor is full of malt, hops and brown sugar. Very good
