Pours dark amber with a thin, tan head. Faint nose of molasses and alcohol. Thick smoky mouthfeel. Tastes of coffee and roasted malt with a hint of bourbon. Bitter finish, weighs heavy on the palate.

Bottle. Pours a deep chocolate, almost black with a thin brown head. Aroma of molasses and caramel. Taste has a good brown sugar or molasses tsar with a typical IPA finish. Good diversion from your typical IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Hazy dark burgundy with a foamy tan head. Flavors are molasses, maple syrup, cocoa powder, caramel and roasted malts with nutty and herbal notes. Medium body, soft carbonation, sticky texture.

Pours dark brown with a massive head. Nose shows chocolate, toasty and nutty malt with a bit of brown sugar and treacle too. Some soft spicy hops. Similar flavours, mainly focusing on the nutty and toasty malt. Again there’s note all that much in terms of hops, just some spicy and earthy notes. A fairly aggressive bitterness though. Nice creamy carbonation.

Dark brown pour with dark tank head. Strong roasted malt aroma, some chocolate aroma as well. Flavor is caramel malt, some chocolate malt too. Finish is hoppy bitter and roasted malt. As the finish fades there is a lingering roasted malt flavor. Nice beer all around.

Bottle. Pours a dark reddy brown with a tan head. Slightly nutty, toasty, caramel aroma. Medium body, medium carbonation. Lots of toffee, hazelnut, lemon, pine, coke, light dark fruit, wood... Too much toffee going on for me, still tasty though.

Really dark brown to black, off white small head, aroma of caramel and molasses, flavours of caramel, malts and spice, creamy body finishing with a mild bitter aftertaste, very good brown ale

Solid. Aroma of caramel, wine, maybe a bit of cinnamon. Tastes the same with a light sour aftertaste that isn’t overwhelming. The cinnamon taste lingers. Could do without the sour but overall a great showing.

DATE REVIEWED: August 8, 2014... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... OCCASION: Watching Return of the King with a worthy beer... APPEARANCE: Wow--allows a look through its body only when held to light--glass is black as a Wraith; the head is two-fingered, off-white and thick.. AROMA: wonderfully balanced: hoppy and citric, with raisin and plum, yet toasted with biscuit... the malts predominate, with a hint of roasted nuts and caramel--intense and robust ... PALATE: thick, creamy, and rather soft in ts carbonation--that classic cola mouth feel; slightly bitter at its end ... TASTE: the aroma sets this beer’s flavor, as dense, blanketed hops give way to unsweetened chocolate and toasted rye bread--a wondrously stout yet drinkable brown, that only hints at the alcohol it wields... OVERALL: what a drink with which to welcome crisp fall nights--strong, stern and warming, yet balanced, complex and highly drinkable...another victory for Sam and the guys at DFH...
