Rhizing Bines is a collaborative IPA using the best of both coasts: Carolina-grown red fife wheat and Dogfish Headís continual-hopping from the East and Sierra Nevadaís estate-grown caramel malt and Torpedo dry-hopping from the west.

Yellow, cloudy, with a ring of foam. Smells weird - cornbread and green peppers. Taste is corn, black peppers, and some woody, piney hops. Crisp finish. Not what I was expecting, but tasty.

Bottle. Pours a light golden with moderate white head. Aroma is lemon, grapefruit, pinesole. Taste is sweet but in a bad way for a DIPA. Pine, hay, grape come into play. Sweetness is again lingering. This is not something iíd come back to. Off. More DFH than Sierra Nevada.

(750ml bottle) hazy deep orange, soapy offwhite bubbles that are reminiscent of Sierra Nevadaís IPAs. Nose is on the malty side, candied citrus peel, caramel, bits of pine and grapefruit pulp. Taste of caramel, highly effervescent, bitter citrus peel thatís well balanced with the malt, I actually like the oily body and caramel malty finish. Nice beer but not world class.

750 mL bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a white head. primarily a roasted/burnt caramel aroma with a slight hop background. Medium body, taste of caramel with some hop flavor. The caramel comes through on the finish. I was expecting a lot more from two outstanding breweries. Wasnít impressed with this one.

Pours a light copper color with a small rocky beige head and nice clinging lace. Toasted malt aroma with some floral hops. Clean crisp complex bittersweet malt flavor upfront with hints of cardamom. Spicy citrus hops in mid taste. Nice dry hop finish. Nicely balanced and flavorful.

Bottle Ron shared. Dark gold. Syrupy palate. Nice look to it with an effervescence. A bit of booze. Okay.

750 ml. Pours a golden copper, clear. Ivory head with decent retention and average lacing. Smell is interesting, definitely get some caramel, citrus hops, almost a bready earthy smell, hard to identify. Taste is citrusy, not overly hoppy, although there is a definite IPA hop bitterness on the back end. the malt does have a nice sweetness to it which doesnít linger too long. Mouth feel is slightly syrupy. Overall I like this beer, but there isnít anything about it thatís blowing me away. The flavors are very subtle, the hop presence is way more tamed than I would expect being a collaboration of these 2 hop giant breweries. Does have a nice spiciness and citrus as you keep drinking. Decent, yet Iím disappointed.

Sorry, Iím not getting it. I have had the best that both Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head have to offer, and this is way down the list. I had heard that this was just released, but if this is an IPA featuring some cool new hops, it is somehow either an old, stale bottle, or those hops arenít very special. Doesnít have more hop flavor, aroma, or freshness than a pretty old bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale. Doesnít drink like an IPA with a pedigree like it has, and not for $16.

25oz bottle from Wegmans. This is a very smooth and drinkable IPA, but it doesnít necessarily blow me away. The beer pours a light copper color with a decent off-white head. The head leaves plenty of sticky and cascading lace around the inside of the glass. The nose features a balanced tone of hops and caramel malt, with some hints of butter, lemon and grass. The body is really smooth, almost as smooth as what a hand pump would give you. The flavors start off slightly dry and spicy with plenty of hops, but then turns sweet and malty. I get some hints of lemon, grass, cereal, grain, caramel and rye. The finish even features a very subtle note of banana.
