This here beer is a lagerific departure for our ale-centric brewery. A marriage of old world tradition and new world innovation, My Antonia is brewed with pilsner malt and continually-hopped with a blend of Noble and West Coast hops.

750 mL bottle bought in March 2011 (price check: $9 at Famous Liquors, Lombard). It’s time! Pours at first like any other macro pale lager. Once the foam starts to settle, I can see the golden beer color is just a little hazy, Head pours pretty puffy over the rim of my narrow pilsener glass. Smell starts off with some citrusy hops, in fact, lime was the first thing I thought of, but sucking on the foam offers some Saaz as well. Finally getting into the beer itself, and I’m just saying what the hell. Malt is nice and thick, and surely all barley malt. Unabashedly teeming with alcohol. Hops have pretty much mellowed down in the palate, but when malts are this strong, I just think of a strong IPA that matches. I would like to have compared this to the Red White & Blue Malt Liquor, but I recall the other just tasted like strong beer. This is an imperially beastly brew indeed.

Bottle (750ml): pours hazy golden. Big white head. Not your typical pilsner. Lots of flavor. Malt and hops.

(bottle - 750 ml - 2010 vintage) Orange pour with a white head. Sweet malts in the aroma with the lightest floral hint. Flavor is sweet at the start and very astringent and bitter near the finish. Lingering bitter aftertaste.

Transfer from BA review on 2-27-12 - Served in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Pours a nice golden color with a light off white head. The head fades with moderate amount of lacing. Smell – A sweeter citrus aroma meets the nose. As the smell advances floral and some maltiness and a bit of more piney hop aroma become detectable. Taste – A crisp taste of citrus flavors are upfront, just as in the nose. A more bready malt flavor works its way in and mixes in with some citrus and pine hop flavors. Toward the end, a little bit of yeast flavor that comes into play; mixing well with the other flavors to round out the taste experience. Mouthfeel – The body is of moderate character with a slightly higher than normal carbonation level. The body and carbonation are very fitting for the crispness of the taste; delivering a rather exciting experience for the tongue. Overall – This is one nice beer. It is crisp and refreshing yet packed with quite a bit of flavor. One I will surly do again.

Reviewed from notes. I poured this into a pilsener glass since it is considered an American Double/Imperial Pilsener. The appearance was a slightly hazy pale yellow with a two finger white foamy head that rises just a bit to mushroom cap just above the glass. She leaves some nice foamy thick lacing gracing the sides of the glass. The smell has a nice light spiciness adding to some pale malts. The taste was sweet and has a nice light spice to it. The aftertaste was spicy and sweet and leads to a dry finish. On the palate, it sits about a light to medium with a decent sessionability running about it. The carbonation is good for the style and good for me as its crisp and smooth. Overall, this is a great American Double/Imperial Pilsener well worth your time and well worthy to have with a peppercorn spiced steak.

From the 750 ml. bottle. No dates of any kind listed. The pour is a slightly hazy pale lime-yellow with a ridiculously foamy white head that takes up half the glass. Lacing, yes. what I find interesting about the aroma is that beyond the expected pale and grainy malts I get a kind of lemon-lime hint. It does not take things over or define the aroma but it is just there. Good body. Smooth. The taste has none of that lemon-lime twist I picked up on the nose. Indeed it is pure grainy and pale malts with a clean, crisp hop finish like a good pilsener should be. I would drink it again.

The aroma is caramel, slight bread and son=me citrus/floral hops. Pours a big white head, mostly diminishing, excellent lacing. The color is a clear yellow/orange. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter. Overall very good.

Pours a nice clear golden color. Some citrus and fruit on the nose, follows onto the palate, a little malty and bready. Finishes pretty clean.

From a bottle. A very nice beer, well balanced hops and malt flavours, smooth and a funky bottle. It’s got it all.

Rated on 8-12-2011. This beer is served in a snifter and its appearance is a medium sized frothy white head with a long retention, hazy body, fast rising carbonation, and a generous amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, citrus and pine hops. The taste is moderately bitter, malt, citrus, and pine hops. The mouthfeel is lively and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is very quaffable with a very nice hop flavor. It is worth trying and a beer I would drink again.
