A witbier bursting with good karma. Made with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander, this Belgian-style white beer is a great thirst quencher. Namaste was originally brewed at our pub in Rehoboth Beach with our Italian friend Leo from Birra del Borgo. It was a tribute to our friends at 3 Fonteinen brewery in Belgium, who had devastating production loss (1/3 of their annual production) in 2009.

This 2010 bottle with Pat was one of my least favorites and thats saying something since I despise this brewery and their douchey approach. I am using Pats review for this one since it was so good:Where to start? Oh, I know. How about with the fact that this is, hands down, the worst beer Dogfish Head has ever had the disgrace of putting their monkier upon. Pours alright, like a traditional Hoegaarden, but without the luster and creaminess in the head. The aroma is corn, urine, and sweat. I guess there’s some lemongrass in there somewhere. So, something akin to urine after someone has eaten asparagus. Body is underwhelmingly modest, the palate is loose and way too malty/corny, and the finish is sheer awfulness. How did this go so wrong? I know it’s not the bottle, because we purchased two, and opened the second just to check. Just as bad. Avoid at all costs. We literally had to dump our glasses after a sip.

Bottle frm Beer Cartel 111016. Has a nice spiciness in the finish with a bit of clove and pepper coming through. Clean and refreshing in the mouth with a light mouthfeel.

American take on the old Belgian witbier style, with lemongrass and peppercorns added to the usual mix of curaçao and coriander seed; apparently developed in collaboration with Birra del Borgo in honor of 3 Fonteinen when the latter suffered great losses due to a technical malfunction. Moussy, regularly shaped, egg-white, dense and creamy head, only slowly opening in the middle; hazy straw blonde colour with greenish hue and vivid sparkling, turning more deeply hazy and less greenish (more ochre-ish) with sediment added. Aroma of a lot of soapy wheat and soggy white bread, clear coriander seed, crushed peppercorns subtly but decidely cutting through this soft soapiness of wheat and coriander, additional hints of dry lemon zest (maybe the lemongrass, applied fresh, but escaping me a bit as such), baked banana, orange peel (which must represent the dried orange peel), old cloves, dried sage, pear, courgette meat, baker’s yeast, old cumin cheese, dust. Crisp, spritzy onset, minerally carbonation holding fruity hints of pear, dried banana and apricot in place, sweetish mixed with sourish but both soft and subdued and the first stronger than the latter; refreshing citrus peel touch as well. Smooth middle phase coarsened a bit by the fizziness, soft soapy wheatiness with some sweetish, lightly honeyish barley, sharper grainy edge as well, undeniable coriander seed soapiness retronasally, lemongrass fragrance remains (too) understated but the initial citrus peel effect remains, peppercorns add a subtle spiciness to the end along with some yeasty phenols (cloves), the yeast itself delivering more breadiness and a slightly powdery feel, and a late touch of earthy hop bitterishness for structural balance, as it ought to be in this style. This hop bitter accent blends perfectly with the peppercorn spiciness, both working together to provide some dryness to the finish. Apart from the fresh lemongrass, a delicate feature which has probably faded by now and should be more apparent when fresh and / or from tap, all the mentioned ingredients are noticeable and cleverly complement each other. The soapy spiciness of coriander is, however, stronger than the rest, and even though this ingredient is crucial for the style in the traditional sense, I wonder if omitting it altogether would not have made this more refreshing, and would have allowed the lemongrass to shine through more. The citrus, however, challenges this coriander effect to a large extent, more so than in Hoegaarden and its many epigones, coming across as more vivid and more fresh; this aspect - along with the somewhat more outspoken ’end bitterness’ - makes this a refreshing, crisp and interesting quencher, surely among the better witbiers I had so far (even if witbier in general is not my most favorite style).

White head and straw body. Citrus aromas, predominately orange and some honeysuckle floral notes. As sweet as it smells, the beer is lively and quenching, creamy and light. Remember to roll the bottle on this pour -- makes a huge difference.

Aroma: spicy and funky; dry; Appearance: cloudy yellow pour with thin white head that dissipates slowly; Taste: lightly spicy with bready-cerealy finish more like a lager; Palate: light bodied with long, spicy finish; Overall: okay but not my favorite style. Would not get again.

Aroma is peppery, orange peel, citrus, wheat, coriander. Appearance is light light straw yellow, white head, hazyish. Taste is peppery, spices, wheat, a sweetness, citrus, decent. Mouthfeel is light body, light crisp carbonation, peppery wheat aftertaste. Overall, it’s definitely crushable, even for a style I usually pass.

Great summertime beer. Pleasant start with a sirprising finish. Not too heavy, but with a quality balance usually only found in heavier stock.
