hallinghansen (263), Odense SV, Denmark Jul 13, 2009 Bottle. Brown/black body, with a medium brown long lasting head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, caramel and liquorice. Flavor is alcohol, wood, vanilla and caramel. Very complex and very delicious. Allmost like an impy stout. thirdeye11 (405), Texas, USA Jul 12, 2009 (12oz bottle thanks to mar) Pours a dark brown with decent tan head. Nose is belgian yeast, spicy and complex and dark fruit. Flavor is light chocolate, sweet and smoky, bready yeast, dark fruits, with a great finish. This beer does not show any of its supposed 12% alcohol in the nose or flavor at all. The best DFH brew I’ve had to date by far. GG (1613), NorCal, California, USA Jul 12, 2009 Wow. I was not expecting this. Picked up some DFH on my recent jaunt to SoCal and finally had a chance to pop this open. A really incredibly, thick, viscuous treat this was from the usually unreliable DFH.
The beer pours out a deep brown/purple/cherrywood color, a scant wispy head (barely one even there) with some garnet colored edges. Aroma is red wine, dark chocolate, scorched nuts, a touch of hot vanilla, kinda musky and a subtle roasted malt character. Flavor is sweet witha ton of malt up front, vanilla, dark fruits and alcohol dominate the flavor. Body is thick, coating, heavy and perfect. Loved the feel of the beer on the mouth...some definite viscocity there. I doubt I could drink more than one of these a night. But the one tonight, was just right. mbgrayson (141), Anaconda, Montana, USA Jul 11, 2009 This one is quite good but very powerful. Bought it almost by accident in a Grass Valley CA liquor store. Could feel the one bottle quite clearly. The wood flavor is there, and I could tell it was a higher abv brew. The taste was rich and smooth, drinkable. Thumbs up. DeadGirl (192), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Jul 11, 2009 Updated: Nov 7, 2009On tap at Rattle ’N’ Hum (NYC): Aroma is like that of coffee and aged wood- which is a little expected (agrd in palo santo wood). Tastes 100% stronger than the aroma it puts off. The alc. content alone makes this ale totally "bomber" worthy. 12% and I can only taste the alcohol only slightly... Okay, more than slightly, but this is still one damn good beer that will fuck with your mind. Rerated on 07112009, DG. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 10, 2009 Original review date March 29, 2008...probably my favorite DFH offering...
Poured from bottle into Cabernet glass...
Big, rye or whole wheat bread-colored head. Oily thick, espresso-colored body. Lacing coats glass nicely
Copious malt and spice (can’t place - a little cinnamon - maybe mild clove or allspice?) with chocolate and caramel overtures with some well-placed yeast
Heavy alcohol and espresso in the forefront with grassy hops (chicory tones) and sweet toasted maly
Very pleasant with deep, sweet alcoholic mouthfeel and finish
Extremely drinkable for style. Amazing stuff that I hope to revisit soon.
mrhoppy (209), Santa Clara, California, USA Jul 5, 2009 At first smells extremely interesting. Wood, chocolate, coffee. Smooth and slight vinegar taste. The buzz I am getting from this is unusual and will describe it as a woody turpentine. Not something I care for. I imagine if I took a bite out of this Palo Santo wood this is it what would taste like. Wood at the beginning, middle and end. I would like to marinate some meat with this beer though. Far too woody for me. oOJUXEOo (27), Pennsylvania, USA Jul 5, 2009 Deep brown pour. Although some say they smell the alcohol right away.... I don’t see that. Very sneaky alcohol wise. Very smooth for a strong ale. Not a session beer, but so good. The aroma is really rich.
