Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Pours thick with a near black color, and smallish dark brown head. Not much lace to speak of, but wouldn’t expect too much at 12 abv. smell of brown sugar. Tastes like a stout, with a woody molasses, coffee and chochlote mix. Yummy.

Draught@Julians, Providence, RI. Something nice happening, but nothing spectacular, some roasted malt, quite soft, and seems less than the 12%. Pretty decent, but just didin’t strike a huge chord with me. Tasty though!!!!

Maple and wood tones on a deep brown ale with a great warming alcohol kick in the throat. This is by far one of the best beers around.

Bottle served in a snifter. Pours oil black with a thin, light grey-brown head. Aroma has chocolate, nuts, and roasted malt notes present. Flavor is mostly sweet: Rich, sugary caramel malt. Mouthfeel and finish is where its really happening. Full bodied. Slick, creamy, and slightly fizzy with a malty sweetness that coats the tongue for a long time.

Smells great and drinks smooth, but just not as much flavor as I woulda hoped for. The story behind this beer is better than the beer itself (Google the New Yorker story on Sam Calagione).

Pours black with a thin light brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, vanilla, sweet malt. Flavors of chocolate, roast malt, vanilla, alcohol and a smoky finish. Alcohol is kind of harsh, but otherwise a fantastic beer that will age well. I’m sticking a few bottles in my cellar!

Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a large whiskey snifter. The beer pours a dark brown with very little head, likely from the long period of aging. Initial aromas throw some notes of wood, vanilla, and a touch of alcohol. As the sample warms, I got a lot more notes of malt complexity. The palate is extremely full on the tongue, almost too full. Up front, I got notes of malt, a touch of vanilla in the middle, and a lot of wood in the finish. Overall, I think this is an awesome beer, but at the same time, probably not a beer that you can have more than one of in an evening.

deep black with nice, oily head that sticks to the glass. nose of sweetness and raisens, figs, smoke and roast. mouthfeel is fairly heavy and full. taste of smokey wood and heavy roast., also slightly sweet. a complex beer that opens up well and definately hides the 12% alcohol.
