Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Sample at July 17, 2009 Beer Club meeting. Nice and... black for a brown ale. That wood aging really did a number on the color. Aroma of raisins and an unmistakable resiny aroma. This reminds me of something from college. But what, I have no idea. Another unique and fine beer from DFH. Delicious! Also enjoyed this with Alex the night I returned home from the hospital with my lovely wife and newborn son as a celebratory consumption. A great beer for special occasions!

Holy aroma, for a malt liquor this is intense. Pours almost black, more of a deep red that you can still see through. Smells of thick woody/malty with some sweetness. On the palate it is thick, and gives a woody taste that dominates the sweetness with a strong alcohol backing. Overall a good beer, very unique.

12fl oz brown bottle. Opaque dark brown pour. Solid cap of thick tan foam, super creamy and tight, fades to a decent clingy ring around the glass. Aroma is sweet, some brown sugar. Flavours are caramel malt, coffee, chocolate - fairly sweet overall with noticable alcohol that is somewhat hard to get past. Some woody mouthfeel, ends with a slight hops bite, dry, roasty, some coffee. Full, slick body, moderate tingling carbonation on the tounge. Interesting, tasty, and big... maybe a bit to big for me to fully appreciate.

Pours a very dark brown. No head, even with an aggressive pour. Lots of oaky wood notes in the aroma (it smells like walking into an antique store). Flavor has some notes of smoke and vanilla, but is again dominated by the woodiness. Lots of alcohol burn, but nothing out of the ordinary given the ABV. Mouthfeel is thick and coating. Very rich and smooth drinking. Excellent beer.

Bottle. Brown/black body, with a medium brown long lasting head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, caramel and liquorice. Flavor is alcohol, wood, vanilla and caramel. Very complex and very delicious. Allmost like an impy stout.

(12oz bottle thanks to mar) Pours a dark brown with decent tan head. Nose is belgian yeast, spicy and complex and dark fruit. Flavor is light chocolate, sweet and smoky, bready yeast, dark fruits, with a great finish. This beer does not show any of its supposed 12% alcohol in the nose or flavor at all. The best DFH brew I’ve had to date by far.

Wow. I was not expecting this. Picked up some DFH on my recent jaunt to SoCal and finally had a chance to pop this open. A really incredibly, thick, viscuous treat this was from the usually unreliable DFH.

The beer pours out a deep brown/purple/cherrywood color, a scant wispy head (barely one even there) with some garnet colored edges. Aroma is red wine, dark chocolate, scorched nuts, a touch of hot vanilla, kinda musky and a subtle roasted malt character. Flavor is sweet witha ton of malt up front, vanilla, dark fruits and alcohol dominate the flavor. Body is thick, coating, heavy and perfect. Loved the feel of the beer on the mouth...some definite viscocity there. I doubt I could drink more than one of these a night. But the one tonight, was just right.

This one is quite good but very powerful. Bought it almost by accident in a Grass Valley CA liquor store. Could feel the one bottle quite clearly. The wood flavor is there, and I could tell it was a higher abv brew. The taste was rich and smooth, drinkable. Thumbs up.
