Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

All the work getting the Palo Santo wood to Delaware was worthwhile. This is some tasty stuff. Tried it brewery-fresh in Milton, and it was a crowd-pleaser. Try a black & tan with Palo Santo and the 90 Minute.

Aroma of vanilla, whiskey, coffee, apples, peaches, raisin, chocolate. On the tongue smooth, rich, bitter, fruity, bit of smoke. When I started drinking these I found it not totally pleasant to finish one, but I have trouble now understanding why.

Bottle shared with DuffmanSW. Pours a black coffee brown with a thin mocha head. Aroma is lots of raisins and vanilla with a good deal of alcohol, a touch of molasses and slightly metallic. Flavor is lots of vanilla and booze, dark stewed fruits and dark sugars. This is really hot, I’d like to cellar it as it’s a bit harsh as it warms. Palate is thick and sticky with medium carbonation.

Peoria Beerfest 2009. Sample pour. Loved this beer. Jet-black, brown head. Vanilla and coffee aroma. Flavor is booze, chocolate, raisin, and a lingering but very subtle oak-bourbon burn. Went back for seconds on this one- delicious. RE-RATE on 9-18-09- Chef Paul’s- bottle. Couldn’t resist getting this again. Slight brown head, coconut, vanilla, allspice aroma. Sweet oaky malt up-front. Beautiful fade of black licorice, and dark bitter chocolate. Starts like a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, but finishes very different- more bitter, chocolate, licorice. Substantial and beautiful.

Bottle shared with Mspindler while watching UFC 97... Dark dark brown with a mocha head when you swirl it around..Smell is of dark fruits , raisins, vanilla and alcohol.. Taste: I swear I can taste that tree when i drink this. Hints of vanilla and alcohol... This is one I want to buy a couple bottles and revisit in a few years.

12oz bottle. Pours black with a thin mocha head. Aroma of wood with chocolate and caramel malt. Initial flavor is slightly sweet, consisting of grapes, raisins, currants, caramel and chocolate malt, and a hint of vanilla. Finish is smoky wood and earth with pleasant warming alcohol. Medium bodied with moderate light carbonation and fizz. There’s definitely a wine-like quality to this beer. Love it.

12oz bottle at our KW group tasting thanks to Mat. I was interested to try this but ended up pretty disappointed, and it had nothing to do with having just tried the Dark Lord. Poured out a dark mahogany with little head. Right from the aroma I could tell this was just not going to be very good. It has that same damn wet paper/pen ink/whatever you want to call it synthetic boozyness that is so prevalent in the World Wide Stout, which I absolutely hate. I also hate how it’s hard to describe and I seem to percieve it a lot differently than most other people so it’s hard to get them to understand how much I hate beers that have that aroma/flavour. The flavour on this one is pretty pathetic, popsicle sticks with way too much residual sugar and toffee malt. Booze. Like a lame attempt at an Imperial Stout. A bit of melon as well. Yuk. I’m appreciative to have tried this, but I would not drink this again were it offered and it really is just not very impressive. Why does everything but the 60 Minute from this brewery suck?
