SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA Mar 1, 2009 Draft at Gravity Head: Deep brown colored pour with an everlasting head. Enjoyable nose of creamy caramel, toffee, vanilla and wood. The body brings everything together beautifully, the wood mingling with the hops and malts in great balance. The wood doesn’t seem as upfront as oak can be - it plays more in the background, helping mesh the crystal and nut flavors together. A very interesting profile indeed. jumpjet2k (137), Austin, Texas, USA Feb 28, 2009 Bottle, dragged to Texas all the way from Illinois. Pours murky black like an imp. stout, with thin tan head. Smells malty, nutty, and definitely woody. Wonderful flavor - tons of dark roasty malt, with hints of licorice, some hops, and some of that 12% alcohol. Mouthfeel is heavy, thick, and also very smooth. Love it. dirt55 (150), Washington, USA Feb 28, 2009 bottled, pours very deep cola with heavy carbonation and medium dark brown frothy head that quickly dissipates, incredibly sweet raisin/fig/brown sugar aroma, nicely balanced taste with smooth roasted malt and lingering combo of sweet alcohol mixed with minimal hopped bitters, full mouth feel due to the bubbles, but not overwhelming, warm alcohol lingering on palate, excellent beverage. cking (1012), North Canton, Ohio, USA Feb 28, 2009 Having no idea what to expect this reminded me of how diverse the beer world can really be. Rich and unique in every sense, a well crafted masterpiece. Resembles a stout due to a dark brown body and steady, filmy tan head. There is surprisingly good lacing attached to this monster with some thick legs. Strong scent of smoked cherries and fresh cut wood. Plenty of vanilla and toffee with a hint of cabernet sauvignon wine. Thick and viscous, sweet and dry. A smokey, boozy breath in the aftertaste. This beer runs the spectrum in the mouth feel department and it does it extremely well. Flavor reminds me of an earthy Manhattan cocktail. Woody with vanilla and cherry. Dark roasted grains with a spicy pepper and caraway presence. There is a lot going on, yet nothing is overpowering. halfonit (423), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA Feb 28, 2009 Wow! This stuff is for real. This is truly one strong ale! Has a nutty/malty brown ale scent. Taste is full of flavor. If you know how a brown ale is supposed to taste, well this is basically that on crack. That’s about all I can say about this. EXCELLENT!! slowrunner77 (58), reno, USA Feb 27, 2009 "WOW or HOLY CRAP! Not sure which of those better sums up this awesome brew. Catergorized as a strong ale, looks & smells like an imperial stout, flavor has the maltier characteristics and carmel/vanilla aspects of a barleywine like Old Stock. Defies style. DFH says it best, "difficult to define, but a wonder to taste". One of my new favorites. If it were, say, 10% instead of 12, it may got a perfect score."
anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Feb 27, 2009 Draft @ Toronado, SF. Pours a dark brown almost black color with a small tan head. Has a malty spicy aroma with some rosted notes and some hints of licorice. Has a roasted malty licorice and dark fruit flavor. Has a long warming malty dark fruit finish with some spicy hints. altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Feb 26, 2009 Ryan/Casey. Darkest brown. Slight oily head. Reminded me of a barley wine. Spicy and malty nose. Taste of chocolate, malts, spices and sweet syrupy barley wine tastes. Quite drinkable but the high ABV put me off. I hate to say it, but I only drank half the bottle...
