Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Bottle in a hotel room in Bruxelles. Black coloured with a huge beige head. Fruity and light roasted aroma of chocolate and dried fruits. Fruity and roasted flavour of chocolate, liquorice, hops and dried fruits with notes of alcohol. Warming alcoholic finish.

Bottle pours a near black, dark chocolate brown color with a thin tan head. Sweet, malty, woody aroma with notes of vanilla, raisins and aged leather. Wonderful rich, full flavor with lots of complexity. Winelike aftertaste with a bitter finish. A warming sensation travels down the throat and chest from the high alcohol content.

courtesy of Allen - cloudy dark brown almost black colour, little brown foam; very malty aroma of chestnuts and chocolate, biscuity; full-bodied and slightly oily, solid sweetness followed by an equally solid bitterness; long finish of chestnuts, solidly malty and toasted with a warming alcohol touch - very well-made brew

Bottle; woody aroma with 1/2 finger dark caramel head the quickly disappeared; poured dark black; deep flavor with super strong flavor of the wood which kinda turned me off a little; however got better as I let it rest; a slow drinker for me. (#10)

Draft at Gravity Head: Deep brown colored pour with an everlasting head. Enjoyable nose of creamy caramel, toffee, vanilla and wood. The body brings everything together beautifully, the wood mingling with the hops and malts in great balance. The wood doesn’t seem as upfront as oak can be - it plays more in the background, helping mesh the crystal and nut flavors together. A very interesting profile indeed.

Bottle, dragged to Texas all the way from Illinois. Pours murky black like an imp. stout, with thin tan head. Smells malty, nutty, and definitely woody. Wonderful flavor - tons of dark roasty malt, with hints of licorice, some hops, and some of that 12% alcohol. Mouthfeel is heavy, thick, and also very smooth. Love it.

bottled, pours very deep cola with heavy carbonation and medium dark brown frothy head that quickly dissipates, incredibly sweet raisin/fig/brown sugar aroma, nicely balanced taste with smooth roasted malt and lingering combo of sweet alcohol mixed with minimal hopped bitters, full mouth feel due to the bubbles, but not overwhelming, warm alcohol lingering on palate, excellent beverage.

Having no idea what to expect this reminded me of how diverse the beer world can really be. Rich and unique in every sense, a well crafted masterpiece. Resembles a stout due to a dark brown body and steady, filmy tan head. There is surprisingly good lacing attached to this monster with some thick legs. Strong scent of smoked cherries and fresh cut wood. Plenty of vanilla and toffee with a hint of cabernet sauvignon wine. Thick and viscous, sweet and dry. A smokey, boozy breath in the aftertaste. This beer runs the spectrum in the mouth feel department and it does it extremely well. Flavor reminds me of an earthy Manhattan cocktail. Woody with vanilla and cherry. Dark roasted grains with a spicy pepper and caraway presence. There is a lot going on, yet nothing is overpowering.
