drseusszb200 (183), Florida, USA Oct 23, 2009 pours very syrupy and very dark with no light penetration and very little head that leaves decent lacing. smells of sweet rum raisons. taste is a little fruitty and sweet to start and ends with a nice smokey taste. acblue (50), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 19, 2009 Dark brown, thick, viscous, tan head that recedes quickly but laces nicely. Lots and lots of oakiness from the bespoke palo santo. Doesn’t make much of an effort to hide its alcohol content, but that isn’t so much to its detriment. ALCOHOLNIZM (59), WARWICK, USA Oct 18, 2009 I WAS SLIGHTLY INTIMIDATED BY THIS BEER WHEN I RECIEVED IT FROM THE DOGFISH BREWERY IN A VARIETY PACK, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT IS 12%ALC BUT ALSO BECAUSE IM NOT SUPER HIGH ON OAK AGED BEERS NOR IM I THAT FOND OF MALT BEVERAGES. HOWEVER, ONCE AGAIN DOGFISH HAS PLEASANTLY SUPRISED ME. THIS BEER POURS A ROUBUST BLACK WITH NO HEAD IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE FLAT SODA AND HAS A STUNNING RAISIN TYPE AROMA ALMOST LIKE A WINE. THE FLAVORS, LIKE THE SMELL AND LOOK, IS ALSO QUITE ROBUST YET NOT OVER POWERING,THE SWEET FLAVOR IS OF ROASTED MALTS, UNSWEETEND CHOCOLATE, SLIGHT VANILLA AND TANGY LICORICE WHICH IS WELL BALANCED WITH CARBONATION THAT ADDS A LITTLE BITE ON THE TOUNGE , IVE HAD A FEW OTHER BEERS THAT WERE SIMILAR TO THIS ONE (EX: THEW BEAST) AND THIS ONE IS BY FAR MORE ENJOYABLE.. NOT RECOMENDED FOR A NIGHT OUT AT THE BAR, BUT QUITE A GOOD AFTER DINNER BEER. TizzleJizzle (46), Garland, Texas, USA Oct 18, 2009 Tingling orgasmic sensation on the nose and poured a surprising dark red, almost black color with minimal lacing. Initial taste of roasted nuts, then had a finish of oak, coffee, and the slight warmth on the way down of the generous 12%. Very impressive, and I will defiantly be picking up more of these brews in the future. Cheers! Lubiere (4464), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Oct 17, 2009 A deep dark ale with a thin moka head. Aroma of chinotto, chocolate, licorice, coffee and spices. In mouth, a dark fruit sweetness, with some peated notes, licorice, molasses, chocolate, with anis, herbal roots, sweet rhubarb, and warming alcohol. Wow! . Bottle, shared with probstk, Sept. 12 2009. troopie (851), USA Oct 17, 2009 Bottle. Poured dark brown with medium brown head Strong woody, roasty and malty aroma. Woody flavour, with much roast malt, a bit of anise and chocolate. Lasting chocolate and pipe tobacco finish. LEKKER! SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Oct 17, 2009 In the bottle from Downtown Johnny Brown’s in San Diego. Pours dark brown with a tan head. I’m not sure that I understand this one. Somewhat oily with an unusual off flavor, that I can only assume comes from the wood resin. Roasted chocolate as expected. Thick body helps to stabilize these odd flavors of anise and tobacco and leather. Very earthy. Caskalefan (42), Bellingham, Washington, USA Oct 17, 2009 Deep brown appearance with a blooming tan head that recedes to a lasting ring. Nose is caramel, chocolate, spice, and vanilla. Flavor is similar, but there’s a pervasive (and delicious) graham cracker quality, and the finish is extremely long. The body is thick (but not too thick). It reminds me of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, but not bourbony, and a little less sweet, and more drinkable. Great stuff!
