Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Rating #400. Bottled 5/28/08. Pours basically black with a dark brown at the edges. Looks thick and viscous with a head that consists of a quick fizz of tan carbonation that is gone immediately. Smell is alcohol, tar, wood, molasses, and syrup. The taste is powerful malts, some caramel and toastiness, then a beautifully integrated alcohol presence, thick smoky notes almost whiskey like and the some peat like a nice scotch. Earthy and woody, this one is a fantastic beer with a great story.

300th Rathing 2008 Bottle - Pours a viscous black with a quickly collapsing brown head...calling this a brown ale is a misnomer...it is damn close to an imperial stout in both flavour and consistency...aroma is caramel malty and toasty with a bit of barrell...flavour is a fantastic...burnt molassas, soy, wood, vanilla...sweet on the end, not too bitter...I love this beer

Poured thick, black with no head. I was very surprised at the consistency of this beer. The aroma is definately malty. When I tried it, I thought there was a very distinct maltiness to it, with no hops and there is a fairly strong medicinal overtone that I get that is unpleasant. There are some hints of wood, that come through as smokey or ashtray at times. Not a beer that I would drink again.

Praise God!! Dogfish is now available in California. Pours a dark tan head. Held up to a light bulb no light shows through the glass. Definately a strong ale/barley wine-esque variety. Aroma is definately on the malty side, but perhaps I am smelling a bit of effect of the wood.. Definately has a woody flavor in the beer. Sort of like a burbon barrell stout without the bourbon overtones. Body is very thick, which does not surprise me since it has 12% alc. Hop character is there toning down the sweetness of the malt, but, as with the aroma, this beer definately leans to the malt side of the spectrum. Very warming on the back of the throat. Warmth lingers on the pallate even a couple of minutes after drinking it. A bit on the expensive side. $15/4pack at BevMo, but am happy to see anything from Dogifish finally make it to Cali. Think aging this would help quite a bit.

Pours a very deep and dark brown nearly black with a small tan froth. Aroma is very strong roasted malt and spices with a nice brown sugar candy like sweetness. Some wood and floral notes as well. Flavor starts with a strong spicy alcohol kick. Slight alcohol stays present throughout. Some cocoa and slight plum fruitiness comes before a very woody finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. Really cool outside the box beer that has an immense mouth feel. Nicely warming on those cold nights.

Pours super dark for a brown ale. That is at least that is what the bottle calls it. Looks like a stout to me. Sandy colored head that diminshed down to a miniscule film. Not much lace. Dark brown sugar and a strange raspberry robitussin menagerie on the nose. I am kinda glad I only got one bottle at this point. Flavor starts with a dutch cocoa bitterness. Initially similar to Indian Brown. Then that crazy raspberry cough syrup duo shows up again. I am assuming this is the Palo Santo wood. I do not think it agrees with my palate much. Finishes with a bitter earthiness not unlike a stout but without the coffee tones. I am not a fan of this one.

Pours a deep dark brown with a tan head of some duration. Aroma is rich with earthiness, wood, roasted malt, and some winelike charateristics. Flavor has roastedness, chocolate, and spiciness. Leaves an impression of flavor at the finish with a slight alcohol warming.

12 ounce bottle in tulip. Dark brown with lasting ring. Wood earth molasses vanilla and jagermeister aroma. Earthy molasses brown sugar dark fruit and jagermeister flavor. Full body and low carbo. I guess this proves something...but gimme a delicious 60 minute IPA any day.
