ksurkin (352), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Oct 21, 2008 Updated: Feb 14, 2009bottle from G&G poured into a dogfish pint glass. pours a very dark, chocolate brown with a nice tan head. aroma is definitely unique with hints of black cherry, coffee, cabernet, bitter chocolate, and some alcohol. flavor is quite complex with the oaky wood flavors, hop bitterness, again some black cherry, and hints of chocolate, and definitely vanilla from the wood aging. mouthfeel is very smooth, almost more stout-like and has a warming aftertaste from the 12%. overall, a very unique and well crafted beer. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Oct 21, 2008 Pours a very dark brownish-black with a brief dense brown head. Aroma is very, very unique... ah yes, Amaretto! Amaretto and artificially-scented sanitizer (cherry?). Tastes quite interesting indeed - Exotic wood taste, not your average oak but something sweet and intense. More amaretto flavour, sharp hops and very present alcohol (warming finish). I had no idea this was 12% but I’m feeling it now! Thin lightly carbonated body. I really like the unique sweetness of this beer, like a wood-aged imperial brown-ale. Tasty! holdenn (1424), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 20, 2008 12 oz bottle from WLV Liquors. Pours a dark brown black with a brown head. Red wine chocolate and roast are strong and rich in the nose. Creamy smooth body. Flavors of rich chocolate, roast, malt, red wine, fruit, alcohol, charred wood. A little overly sweet, but that comes with the richness. A slight burn from the booze but it blends well in the nose and flavor. I thought this would be too boozy and overdone. But the alcohol makes for rich and flavorful beer. This ones for Craig. JFURYCAT (782), East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 20, 2008 Nice pour with a chocolate tinge and bubbly lacing on tap. Flavor-wise, there is a good amount of sweetness neatly balanced by coffee vanilla bean infused woodiness with some pepper in the finish. Aroma has a strong alcoholic quotient to it along with mahogany. Thanks to Rich L. for sharing. HopDuvel99 (39), Tennessee, USA Oct 20, 2008 To me this is more like an imperial stout than a strong ale. It’s intense in pretty much every way a beer can be: color, aroma, taste, mouthfeel, and alcohol. The only thing it’s not intense in is hops--not that it’s underhopped. The aroma is alcohol and fruit. Mouthfeel is thick and velvety. Flavor is sweet, woody, roasty with subtle bitterness and a sour finish. Intense and satisfying. wxman (580), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Oct 20, 2008 Pours an absolutely opaque dark brown with a fairly substantial stout-like brown head considering the ABV. High ABV beers tend to not foster much head, if any. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and merlot. Taste is a delicious blend of espreso coffee, dark chocolate, bittersweet roasted malt and red wine. Very busy, but well balanced and exceptionally good. movezig (137), Pensacola, Florida, USA Oct 20, 2008 Oh my, my my my. This beer is so close to a stout its not even funny. Nose is heavy roast dark fruits baked character. Flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, strong coffee, and toffee. Very complex. Nice full fody. This is an amazing brew. Nice alc warming in the finish. Miamifan1354 (19), , Delaware, USA Oct 20, 2008 Bottle to Trappist Glass. Pours thick, almost like a stout. Smells of wood, dried fruits and some alcohol. The wood taste is obvious, along with coffee and chocolates. Great dessert beer.
