naivepegasus (183), USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours black very a minuscule soapy tan head. A lot in the odor, including sweet malt, caramel, some dark fruit. The taste starts off light, then ends with a building flavor of sweet malt and some oak flavor in the aftertaste that eventually fades into a distant hoppy bitterness. Interesting, complex beer. f351c4v (404), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 5, 2008 On tap @ Toronado. Pours a black color with a small tan head. HUGE aroma, roasted malts, caramel, oaky, campfire. Very sweet and tasty, nutty, definitely malty. Can pick out the effects of barrel aging. Top notch. Bungalo22 (326), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA Oct 5, 2008 Poured from the bottle into a snifter a dark, dark black with hints of brown. The head was beautiful with tan or brownish hints. The aroma was malty, slight wood or earth notes with some caramel and vanilla mixed in there. It is clear immediately that this would age in an awesome way. The taste is so full with dark fruits and a very unique wood like taste. It is both sweet at times and bitter - outstanding. On the palate the flavor keeps developing for quite a while. Just really nice. paiste2002 (148), Saugus, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 12oz bottle pours a very nice pitch black with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty sweet, earthy, dark caramel, vanilla, dark fruit, raisins. Flavor is malty sweetness, dark caramel, oak/bourbon, dark fruit raisins alcohol. Medium/heavy mouth feel, long roasty, oaky, bitter finish. Very complex big brew, nice!
mj (4975), Colorado, USA Oct 4, 2008 Drinking a bottle that I forgot about in a cooler for a couple of months. The cap is super rusty, the label is mostly worn off, and there’s rust-colored goop underneath the cap. It pours deep brown/black with a dark brown head. Nose is full of dusty dry cocoa powder, similar bakers chocolate, but with a fairly high level of alcohol noticed. There are also some notes of charred plum and chocolate covered nuts, but never comes off as sweet. Flavor is rich cocoa covered plums with a bready note that resembles fresh baked brownies. The alcohol is well hidden, very minimal amounts detected.. soft and silky over the middle, drying and turning to bitter cocoa powder in the finish. Very good stuff. Get a brain marrons. T2Tool (352), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Oct 4, 2008 Poured from a 12-oz bottle an almost black color, which was surprising since this states it is a brown ale. Smell of sweet caramel malt, vanilla, oak and alcohol. Taste was strong on the alcohol. You can also taste the oak, bourbon and some raison. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 3, 2008 2008-10-02. Very very dark brown body with a modest tan head. Lovely aroma, modest woody notes, touches of sour cherries/fruit, a hint of spice emerges from nowhere and does not stay long, light alcohol starts to emerge as it warms. Sweet malt base, muted spice and wood, mild fruit, light bitterness balances it out nicely. Alcohol is barely there. Smooth medium bodied palate is perfect for the beer. Bottle Shared by GregClow
ChuxBeer23 (10), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Oct 2, 2008 Bottle. Vintage 2008.
Huge. This means business from the get-go. Dark, clean and a nicely forming head of soft brown hues. Alcoholic nose with an almost medicinal aroma. Nose and tongue are beaten into submission with bold flavor profiles consisting of heavy roast, wood and rum-soaked raisin. Snappy finish on the tongue. Very complex and could lay the smack down if you don’t respect it.
