EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Sep 21, 2008 A well balanced beer with well matched aroma and flavor. This nearly black beer had a wonderful combination of coffee and licorice, dark and bright fruits, a bit of sweetness and a bit of dryness, smoke, and even a hint of bubble gum. While there was a great warmth to this beer, the alcohol never stands out but only adds to the experience. To me this is an exceptional beer that I need to serve to friends. apshah99 (137), Portland, Oregon, USA Sep 21, 2008 Very dark pour, with thin tan head. Intensely alcoholic aroma with chocolate malt and dark fruit. Almost smells like a Christmas cake. Taste is very sweet with more chocolate malt and dark fruit; the finish ends with a more roasted bitterness, but the weetness remains throughout. Complex heady brew, perhaps just a little too much on the sweet side; still quite delicious though. Nice carbonation on the palate with well balanced body. DrGonzo (625), Somerville, Massachusetts, USA Sep 20, 2008 Deep brown nearly black with large tan head. Beautiful pour. Aroma of cocoa powder, raisins, black cherry. Flavor lands very sweet on the palate, like a sweet dark chocolate. The sweetness subsides initially, but the chocolate lingers. After about 5-10 seconds the profile develops a smoky edge, the wood is starting to come through. The whole package melts together and lingers on in perpetuity, with a fair amount of alcohol burn emerging. Highly enjoyable. Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 20, 2008 An oily pour, good label and bottle. Boozy raisin, molasses, stout aroma. Roasted alcohol dominance, dired fruits, moderate astringency over a nice hopping. Heavy body. Woody, bitter chocolate, roast finish. Very good, but potent. IMtheOptimator (1161), Bethel, Connecticut, USA Sep 20, 2008 Poured a rich dark brown/black with a creamy light brown head. Rich aroma of pipe tobacco, chocolate, strawberries, a bit of oak, roastiness. Flavor isn’t quite as impressive and comes off more one-dimensional, with notes of some dark fruits and burnt wood, a dash of chocolate, and a metallic alcoholic finish. This beer’s nice aroma and beautiful appearance compels me to give it a decent score. However, overall I consider it at best average for motivating my desire to return to it again in the future. An ok experiment--and I will always give DFH credit for experimenting--but not as good as some of their year-round brews. smjohnst (202), , Pennsylvania, USA Sep 18, 2008 Had a STRONG alcohol flavor to it. It was sweet at first but it really finished like alcohol. Nice look to it, a well made beer, just too much for me. Magicdave6 (5400), London, Greater London, England Sep 18, 2008 Cask at GBBF many thats to Chris from realale.com for writting this down for me. Tas molane, marzipan, overpoweringly rubbish, massive roasty character, really one dimential, far too alcoholic, a little bit of chocolate. Pritty undrinkable altogether. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Sep 17, 2008 Bottle. Deep, near black with red undertones. Tiny dirt colored head that sits there the whole time. Potent nose with a lot of alcohol, malt, burn. A lot of heat. Same goes for the flavor which is very full, complex, and amazing. Flavors of tobacco, smoke, wood, insanely rich red wine, plums. The finish really warms me up and fills my mouth with even more flavors, lots of sweetness, like great heavy candy. Leaves me feeling warm and happy.
