Initial taste of roasted nuts, then had a finish of oak, coffee, and the slight warmth on the way down of the generous 12%. Very impressive, and I will defiantly be picking up more of these brews in the future. Cheers! Lubiere (4480), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 17, 2009 A deep dark ale with a thin moka head. Aroma of chinotto, chocolate, licorice, coffee and spices. In mouth, a dark fruit sweetness, with some peated notes, licorice, molasses, chocolate, with anis, herbal roots, sweet rhubarb, and warming alcohol. Wow! . Woody flavour, with much roast malt, a bit of anise and chocolate. Lasting chocolate and pipe tobacco finish. LEKKER! SledgeJr (2960), Omaha, Nebraska, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 17, 2009 In the bottle from Downtown Johnny Brown’s in San Diego. Pours dark brown with a tan head. I’m not sure that I understand this one. Somewhat oily with an unusual off flavor, that I can only assume comes from the wood resin. Roasted chocolate as expected. Thick body helps to stabilize these odd flavors of anise and tobacco and leather. Very earthy. Caskalefan (42), Bellingham, Washington, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Oct 17, 2009 Deep brown appearance with a blooming tan head that recedes to a lasting ring. Nose is caramel, chocolate, spice, and vanilla. Flavor is similar, but there’s a pervasive (and delicious) graham cracker quality, and the finish is extremely long. The body is thick (but not too thick). It reminds me of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, but not bourbony, and a little less sweet, and more drinkable. Great stuff! | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 16, 2009 Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours a very nice deep, dark brown with tan head. Aroma is very interesting and odd at the same time, Alcohol, an odd wood I am not familiar with, roasty, I think I detect pine as well, also a little chocolate.....just very odd. Flavor isn’t much different, with alot of alcohol spice and strange woody bitter. Mouth feel is heavy body with medium carbonation. Overall, this is one of the oddest beers I have tasted and I am glad to have had it...simple but yet complex and very strong. I need to age one for a year to see what it is like. It’s really fresh at the moment.... angrypirate06 (706), Texas, USA
