Taste is woody, licorice, and dark chocolate. bourbon (?). Sweetness on the palate is evident. Honestly this tastes like a good cherry cordial. zebracakes (1214), Washington DC, USA Aug 31, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours opaque black, thin tan head. Aroma is anise, molasses, chocolate, pine. Smells very syrupy, like port. Flavor is chocolate, licorice, woody, coffee, molasses, caramel, vanilla: quite complex. This is very chocolate truffle like, but not too sweet. I recommend this as an after dinner sipper. leninthedesert (112), Nevada, USA Aug 30, 2008 Extremely unique beer from Dogfish Head. Many different flavors coming at you at once, yet they all seem to work together perfectly. Roasty, toast malt flavor, cedar, spice, yeast and earthy notes. Great beer...pass me another! jcr (1136), Jasper, Indiana, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottle. Small, frothy tan head that diminishes to a rim of small bubbles. Dark brown to black body. Malts and alcohol dominate the nose. Molasses, caramel, toasted grain, sugar, vanilla, whiskey barrel. The flavor is very sweet and only lightly bitter. The finish is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Alcohol warming in the back of the throat. Light taste of cardboard and distinct tastes of licorice and especially tobacco. Full body with a syrupy texture. Plenty of carbonation. Didn’t enjoy this all that much because of the thick sweetness followed by a finish of bitter cardboard. Blød og runs. ligesom bager. allfreej (358), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottled on 02/11/2008. Poured dark brown, viscous-looking, brown lacy head. Nose was dark fruit, chocolate, raisins. Flavor was vanilla, coffee, chocolate, wood, slightly sweet. Finish was slightly dry, subtle alcohol notes. Mouthfeel was pleasingly carbonated, balancing the viscousness of the beer.
